Today we’d like to introduce you to Uncle Roy & Spice.
Hi Uncle Roy & Spice, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
We met in Washington D.C in 2oo8, at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, where we both studied Vocal Music Performance. We immediately connected through our families artistic backgrounds, and our love for choral music and vocal production. Also we just loved singing together! Once we went on to college we stayed connected, and continued to sing together any time we could. Spice moved to Texas in 2018, and in 2019 when she joined Austin band Sir Woman, Uncle Roy moved to Texas the following week to join the band with her. After years of performing together with multiple artists, a close friend asked us what it would take for us to do our own thing, and at that moment we looked at each other and wondered the same thing! From that moment forward we’ve been a duo, writing music and performing together any time we can. And it’s been so much fun!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Roy: It’s been smooth, I’d say the only challenge would be taking the time to really get all of the music to the place that both of us really want it to be. But that’s not really a struggle, it’s just the process which is beautiful.
Spice: Yeah, we’re both perfectionists, but also find freedom in the music is important too, so we’re always working to do that.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We’re writers, we’re performers, and we’re just lovers, so we like to express that through our art. We specialize in vocal production, songwriting, arranging, and we LOVE to perform and bring different elements like choreography into that as well. We’re definitely known for our harmonies, our blend, and our somewhat edgy dance moves, haha we like to drop it LOW! We’re probably most proud of being able to really do this together as best friends for 17 years, and to see our daily growth as artists. We also love to be able to connect with so many people across different backgrounds through our music.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Just keep creating, don’t stop out of fear or being worried that you’ll be judged, or embarrassed. Just make what you think is beautiful, and share it with the world. You never know who needs to hear what you’ve gotta say.
