Exploring Life & Business with Don & Tammy Struble of The Loose Screw Craft Beer House & Garden

Today we’d like to introduce you to Don & Tammy Struble.

Hi Don & Tammy, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Tammy and I (Don) both worked in the corporate world for many years. When met we both decided to focus on our lives together and spend as much time together as possible. We came to the conclusion that working together for ourselves was much more satisfying than working apart. We both shared a love of craft beer, live music, and wonderful people. A family friendly beer garden was the clear future we envisioned. The Loose Screw was born. We moved to Taylor Texas to further escape the corporate landscape and found a space at The Old Taylor High. We were one of the first businesses to open in the old high school built in 1923. Tammy and I built out as much of the space that we could on our own. We filled the space with eclectic furniture and music posters. We built a big deck outside that can double as a stage for live music. One of the unique features of space is the passthrough window that allows us to serve directly to our patrons in the garden.

We feature over 40 rotating taps of the best craft beer Tammy and I can find. Our staff is also super friendly and knowledgeable, making sure our customers have the best beer tasting experience. Our beer wall is constantly rotating – meaning, we never put the same beer on the wall two times in a row.

In short, Tammy and I abandoned the safety of corporate America to pursue our small business dreams. And for the last 6 years, we have loved every minute of it.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
surviving the covid years was not easy for most small businesses. Like just about everyone else, we struggled. Fortunately, our Taylor customers stepped up and supported us enough to keep the lights on and keep serving great craft beer. We owe much of our success to our loyal customers that continue to support us as much as possible.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are one of the best Craft Beer Houses in Texas. Our beer selection has no rival and our family friendly environment offers a safe space for everyone. Our only requirement is a love for great beer and a kind heart.

We support our community as much as possible and we are huge supporters of our local music scene.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Don’t be afraid of the leap. Trust your gut and go for it. Small Businesses are tricky to start and maintain but if you are passionate enough and work hard for it, it can be successful. There is never a “perfect time” to start. Waiting for the “right” time is not possible. Just take the leap when you are ready and throw all your energy into it.
