Today we’d like to introduce you to Izrah And Jay Tan-Sprague And Sprague.
Hi Izrah and Jay, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
We both came from the medical field, working as respiratory therapists, Jay for over 25 years and Izrah for 14. After years in that world, we were ready for something different. Helping people has always been important to us, and we wanted to keep doing that, just in a way that felt more creative, fulfilling, and on our own terms. In April 2024, we officially stepped away from healthcare to start a new chapter.
The idea had been brewing for a while. Several years ago, during an overnight stay in Sedona, we were drawn to aura photography. We searched for several spots offering it, but each one had already closed for the day. The experience slipped through our fingers, but the curiosity stayed with us. A couple years later, we finally had our first aura photo taken locally. That moment planted a seed. It sparked a vision of how we could bring our own perspective to the experience, one shaped by our backgrounds, love for art, and desire to create something thoughtful and personal. That’s when Karmic Snapshot began to take form.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the biggest challenges we’ve faced happened this past January. We were setting up for an event when, out of nowhere, our aura camera stopped working. We tried everything we could to troubleshoot it on the spot, but nothing worked. It was such an embarrassing moment, not being able to deliver the experience we promised. We had to cancel the event and ended up losing an entire month of bookings while we sent the camera back to California for repairs. To make matters worse, the repair facility was dealing with wildfire evacuations, which delayed things even more. It was a tough time, but we used that unexpected setback to reset, reevaluate, and get our heads in the right direction.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Karmic Snapshot is a mobile aura photography business based in Austin, Texas. We offer a visually engaging take on aura photography, pairing Polaroid-style aura portraits with a calm, curated experience. At the moment, we’re focused on smaller, intimate gatherings as we grow, with plans to expand into larger events in the future.
We know we’re not the first to offer aura photography, and we’re grateful for the trailblazers who brought this concept into the spotlight. What makes our approach personal is the intention behind it. With roots in healthcare, we’re used to holding space for people and that carries into every session. We don’t try to be anything we’re not. We offer a down-to-earth, sensory moment that feels human and heartfelt.
What we’re most proud of is how people leave our sessions feeling seen, inspired, and more in tune with themselves. Whether it’s a wedding shower, retreat, or private gathering, our goal is to create a moment of meaningful reflection, a chance to reconnect and walk away with a beautiful snapshot of your energy.
Each guest receives a Polaroid aura photo, a magnetic 4×6 frame, a Karmic Snapshot sticker, and a color interpretation card. We include the frame because we believe these photos shouldn’t just be tucked away, they’re meant to be seen. Whether it’s on a fridge, mirror, or desk, we want it to serve as a daily reminder of who you are in that moment, and maybe even spark a conversation or two.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
One of the biggest lessons we’ve learned is the importance of genuine connection, both with the people we serve and the people we collaborate with. This work has reminded us that people don’t just want a service, they want to feel something. Whether it’s a quick moment during a pop-up or a deep conversation at a private event, connection is what makes the experience memorable. We’ve also learned that building real relationships in the community, other vendors, planners, and clients is just as vital as the quality of the product itself. Connection creates trust, and trust opens doors.
