Today we’d like to introduce you to Kerry Cavender.
Hi Kerry, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My name is Kerry Cavender. I was working in the flooring and design industry for ten years. I have three boys. When they went to College I decided to open a flooring and tile design center in the heart of Dripping Springs. It has been about two and a half years since I took a leap of faith and opened the doors. It was one of the scariest things I have ever done in my life. Not to mention I am a woman in my 50’s. It has been very rewarding and challenging. The first year I set a goal for myself. If I did not reach it I was going to rethink the whole thing. Thankfully I exceeded my goal. The following year I doubled my sales. I cater to custom builders and designers. I also share my building with a fabulous designer. We have a dozen or more custom builders we work with. Not to mention some fantastic designers. We hand pick everything in our showroom. We have some great things to make everyone’s space unique and personal. The designer Danyale does houses from the ground up. I specialize in tile and flooring design. We have done houses anywhere from eight hundred square feet to ten thousand square feet. We have gutted bathrooms, kitchens, and whole houses. . We love being a woman owned business. There are days when we are ready to throw in the towel as construction is tricky. What I have learned is most problems can be solved. I have learned not to give up. This has taught me so much. It has taught me you are never too old to follow your dream.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
This is a very challenging business. Designing is the fun part. What people do not see is the behind the scenes. Estimating the right amount of material. Ordering it and tracking it. Making sure it gets to where it needs to go. Guiding tile and flooring installers on layouts. Making sure they are doing a good job. Dealing with back order and price increases. Making sure the tile doesn’t come in broken. There are a lot of turning parts once someone selects their material. There are mistakes sometimes that need to be corrected.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We believe our tile design sets us apart. We are very proud of the beautiful bathrooms we create. We are also proud of the tile selection we have brought to the showroom. We feel like every job we do highlights the owner personality. We want people’s home to be their favorite place to be. To come home and feel relaxed and happy in their space. That is what sets us apart. We truly care about our clients and their end result.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Just do it! What do you have to lose. It’s very rewarding to do what you love.
