Today we’d like to introduce you to Sonya Maxwell.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I wasn’t ready for college right after high school, but I knew I needed a direction—so at 19, I took a chance and enrolled in beauty school on a whim. I feel very fortunate with this chance I took.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting out as a young hairstylist, I often struggled with imposter syndrome. Lack confidence in my ability. Also, as a young stylist you just have to work your ass off to build you books & clientele.
Even now, I still experience imposter syndrome. Despite my growth and accomplishments, there are moments when I question whether I’m good enough or truly qualified. It’s an ongoing mental battle, but I’ve learned to acknowledge those feelings without letting them control me.
Now that I’ve been behind the chair for 20+ years and have my own studio, I continue this song & dance of trying to find a healthy balance between work and personal life.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
With 20 years of experience as a master stylist and colorist, creating precise and artistic haircuts and color, dedicated to making clients feel confident and glowing. As a certified Lived-In Color Specialist, I also recommending sustainability and clean beauty, using organic, low-toxic products to ensure a healthy experience for both clients and the planet.
My favorite looks include everything from sleek, structured bobs to shiny, rich brunettes, and soft, sun-kissed balayages that feel effortless and natural:
I love the 1:1 time I have with my guests in studio.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Great question! I’ve lived in the Austin area since I was 2 so I have tons of random memories. We lived central till I was 8 and moved to Pflugerville. It’s hard to say, I’ve seen a lot of change and have been apart of some “old Austin” charm and I’m just grateful to have those experiences.
