Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaime Reynolds.
Hi Jaime, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve always made art, but it wasn’t until I became a mother that I started to take watercolor seriously—as both a practice and a path. Something about that season cracked me open. I didn’t have endless time or space, but I had this deep need to create something that was just mine.
Watercolor met me there. It’s fluid, imperfect, responsive—so much like parenting. And the more I painted, the more I realized it wasn’t just about the art. It was about paying attention. About finding softness in the middle of the chaos.
What started as a personal practice slowly turned into a career. I began sharing my work, then teaching others, and eventually building a business around helping people reconnect with their own creative rhythms. These days, I split my time between painting and teaching, but watercolor is still at the center of everything.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Smooth? Not even close. I’m a mom of two, running a household, a marriage, a business, and—on a really ambitious day—maybe also a load of laundry. I’m the one pitching myself, managing social media, prepping workshops, packing up orders, and still trying to find actual time to paint. It’s a lot of hats!
The hardest part by far is time. Not just finding it, but protecting it. There’s always something or someone that needs you—but watercolor has been the thing that brings me back to myself. Even if I only have twenty minutes before school pickup, those twenty minutes matter.
I’ve learned that the juggle never really ends—but you can find your rhythm inside it. Some days are beautifully productive, others are just… snacks and survival. I try to be okay with both.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a watercolor artist and teacher, and I specialize in the kind of work that celebrates the perfectly imperfect—loose brushwork, earthy palettes, and subjects that feel both everyday and a little bit magical. My paintings often feature flora, fauna, and quiet moments that ask you to slow down and pay attention.
In addition to making and selling original art, I teach watercolor as a practice of creativity and self-trust. I partner with local Austin businesses to lead public and corporate workshops, and I teach longer-format classes at The Art School at Laguna Gloria, where we really dive into technique and personal style.
I think what sets my work apart is the feeling behind it. There’s a softness and an honesty there. I’m not trying to make perfect paintings—I’m trying to make honest ones.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Substack has become one of my favorite places on the internet. It feels more about connection than algorithms. I always look forward to Elizabeth Gilbert’s newsletter. Her book Big Magic helped bring me back to creativity after art school burnout, and her writing still reminds me to trust the process.
I also love Kelly Klein’s Substack. She writes about personal style in a way that’s practical and refreshing. She focuses on wearing what you already own in new ways. And though I don’t work in interiors anymore, design was my major at Pratt Institute, so I still draw a lot of inspiration from that world. I always pay attention when Kelly Wearstler releases something new—her sense of form and color gets me thinking in new ways.
And (!) I write a Substack too, called The Wisdom of Watercolor. It’s where I share monthly watercolor practices, creative rituals, and occasional interviews with creative friends. You can find it at jaimereynolds.substack.com.
