Rising Stars: Meet Sabrina Macias of South Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sabrina Macias.

Hi Sabrina, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve always felt a strong pull toward a creative career, but for a long time, I wasn’t sure how to pursue that passion while maintaining a sense of stability. After graduating from Texas State University, I made a conscious decision to say “yes” to as many opportunities as possible, eager to grow my skill set, and build upon my resume.

Over the years, I’ve worn many hats from working as a social media manager for everything from local pizza shops to tourism destinations and small businesses while trying to hone my craft in freelance writing and photography. During college, I made it a priority to get involved wherever I could, taking on multiple internships and making connections with people who later became mentors, collaborators, and even advocates recommending me for new projects and roles.

One of the most pivotal experiences in my journey was joining the photo crew at SXSW through a college opportunity. While there, I took the initiative to ask how I could continue working with SXSW after graduation. That small act of curiosity opened the door to lasting relationships and ongoing freelance work, something I continue to build on today.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not exactly, and honestly, I don’t expect it to be for a while. I’m in my early 20s and still working toward a place where I feel a stronger sense of stability. That said, I’m finally reaching a point where I feel I’m in a good spot to grow mentally, creatively, and professionally, and that all feels like progress worth celebrating.

Some of the biggest struggles have been around balance. I’ve often worked multiple jobs just to make ends meet while still carving out time to pursue the creative work I care about. Whether it was saving up for photo equipment or taking on projects purely for experience, there’s been a lot of behind-the-scenes hustle. It hasn’t always been easy, but every challenge has pushed me to grow and stay committed to the bigger picture!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I currently work full-time as a publicist but I also freelance for writing and photography. I’ve previously held roles as a social media manager/marketing specialist.

What I’m most proud of is the range of experience I bring to the table. I’ve worked across multiple sides of the industry (marketing, advertising, content creation, media) and that perspective helps me understand the bigger picture and anticipate what a team or client might need before they ask. I take pride in being able to use that knowledge in a meaningful way, to solve problems, support creative teams, and ultimately help clients put their best foot forward.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love that there’s never a dull moment. Austin is almost overwhelming in the way that there’s so much to do all the time. I can’t keep up! There’s wonderful food, community, and something for everyone.

I least like parking downtown. It’s stressful and I have the worst luck. That and the price of cocktails. $18?!?
