Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Galambos.
Hi Kate, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Our journey began about nine years ago when my husband and I moved from Hungary to Texas. It was a big leap—new country, new language, new beginning—but we brought with us the flavors and traditions of home.
Not long after arriving, we decided to share a piece of Hungary with our new community. We started with a humble food truck at the Round Rock Premium Outlets, serving authentic Hungarian dishes. It wasn’t always easy, but the joy on people’s faces when they tried our food reminded us why we started. We poured our hearts into every plate, and slowly but surely, word began to spread.
Over the years, we built a loyal and loving customer base—people from all over the world who were curious about Hungarian cuisine or craving a taste of home. Their support and encouragement gave us the courage to take the next step.
We recently opened our first restaurant at Lakeline Mall in Austin, called Taste of Hungary. It’s been a dream come true. Our menu features traditional Hungarian dishes and desserts, with some of our most popular items being langos, goulash, schnitzel, and our beloved Gerbeaud (walnut and chocolate) cake.
This journey has been one of hard work, passion, and community. We’re proud to represent our culture here in Texas, and we’re so grateful to everyone who’s been a part of our story.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road—starting a business rarely is, especially in a new country. When we moved from Hungary to Texas, everything felt unfamiliar: the culture, the language, even the way business worked here. We had to learn everything from the ground up—how to run a food truck, navigate permits and regulations, and connect with customers in a place where Hungarian food wasn’t well known yet.
There were long days and late nights, especially in the beginning. Sometimes it felt like we were doing everything ourselves—cooking, shopping, cleaning, even fixing things on the truck. Weather could be unpredictable, and there were days when we barely made enough to cover costs. But we kept going, because we believed in what we were doing.
Opening Taste of Hungary, our new restaurant at Lakeline Mall, came with its own challenges—renovations, staffing, supply issues—but every obstacle taught us something new and brought us closer to our dream.
Looking back, the struggles made us stronger. They taught us patience, resilience, and how to be creative when things didn’t go as planned. Most importantly, they showed us the value of community and how powerful support from loyal customers can be.
As you know, we’re big fans of Taste of Hungary. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Taste of Hungary is more than just a restaurant—it’s a celebration of Hungarian culture, tradition, and comfort food made with love. We serve authentic Hungarian dishes and desserts, all based on family recipes passed down through generations. From the beginning, our mission has been to introduce people in Texas—and beyond—to the rich, flavorful, and hearty cuisine of Hungary.
We’re known for our signature dishes like langos (a deep-fried flatbread that’s crispy on the outside and soft inside, often topped with garlic, sour cream, and cheese), goulash (a traditional beef stew with vegetables), and schnitzel (tender, breaded and fried meat cutlets). Our desserts, especially our walnut and chocolate cakes, are also customer favorites. Everything we serve is made fresh, homemade from scratch, and with care.
What sets us apart is authenticity. We want every bite to taste like it came straight from a Hungarian grandmother’s kitchen. We believe in staying true to our roots, and our customers appreciate the honesty and heart behind every dish.
We’re also incredibly proud of the community we’ve built. People from all over the world visit us—some trying Hungarian food for the first time, others reconnecting with flavors from their childhood. Seeing their joy and hearing their stories is the most rewarding part of what we do.
Brand-wise, we’re proud to represent Hungarian culture with integrity and pride. Our goal is to make Taste of Hungary feel like home for everyone who walks through our doors. Whether you’re looking for a quick lunch, a comforting meal, or a taste of something new, we’re here to share a little piece of Hungary with you.
