Hi Candice, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey at Mockingbird Management began serendipitously in 2002 when I joined as a part-time Assistant Manager, shortly after marrying my husband. This initial role quickly evolved, leading to a full-time Assistant Manager position, and subsequently, I was promoted to Manager in 2006. My career progressed alongside personal milestones, as I welcomed my first son, Wyatt, in 2007, and then my second son, Waylon, in 2010. Throughout these changes, a strong faith guided me, reminding me that all achievements are possible with grace.
In 2009, I stepped into the role of Supervisor, and by 2012, I had progressed to General Manager. Throughout this journey, I also attended school part-time, earning both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in business and accounting from UMHB. In pursuit of further growth, I transitioned to a Staff Accountant position with Kimmy Jackson & Associates in 2016, while also consulting for Mockingbird. Although this role offered opportunities to enhance my skills, I soon realized that a career focused solely on accounting felt isolating and did not align with my broader mission to make a meaningful contribution to the community—an ambition deeply inspired by my faith.
In 2019, after noticing that my role at Mockingbird was still unfilled, I chose to step back in with a leadership focus. This choice ultimately resulted in my acquisition of Mockingbird Management from Alison Hunsicker in 2022. Acquiring the company was a thrilling yet demanding process, made smoother by Alison’s tremendous support, especially as she had recently experienced her own transitions. Her belief in my vision for the company reflected the trust and respect we had cultivated over the years.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Leading Mockingbird Management has been an immensely rewarding journey, marked by triumphs amid various challenges. Balancing career advancement with family life tested both my resilience and adaptability, and mastering this balance stands as a significant achievement. Earning my degrees was not easy-it required years of dedication as I managed my studies while simultaneously raising two sons and working full-time. Through it all, my faith provided a steady foundation.
Transitioning from a staff accountant to a leadership position in asset management presented its own unique challenges. Nevertheless, it was a rewarding progression that rekindled the camaraderie I had longed for with colleagues, partners, and residents.
Returning to Mockingbird as the owner ushered in a new chapter, not just for the company, but for me personally. It was a period of learning and growth, as I worked to blend my passion for community development with the strategic business skills I had honed. This role has challenged me to foster a culture of innovation and collaboration, essential for thriving in today’s competitive environment.
