Meet Xing of Restore Hyper Wellness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Xing.

Hi Xing, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Your Story

I’m a first-generation immigrant, born in the far northeast of China—a little stretch of land that’s actually north of parts of Russia. We immigrated to Texas when I was in the first grade. I had a very Texan upbringing, going to public schools in Arlington and Plano. I’ve always tried to be a student of American culture—to learn how to be American.

My interest in health and wellness started on the fitness side—I just wanted to work out and look good. I went to UT, and through an unexpected turn of events ended up on the UT Taekwondo team, where I met one of my lifelong friends and future business partner, Joe. We had also always riffed on different business ideas, from Airbnb to tech products.

After college, I started my career in enterprise software consulting. Since then, my career has alternated between software consulting and health/wellness startups. When the health startup ran out of money, I’d go back to my bread and butter of enterprise software consulting.

That work brought me to Shanghai, where I lived for almost two years. Later, I moved to Berlin to dive deeper into data, and to satisfy a personal interest in German “Ordnungsliebe”—the love of order, that we often attribute to Germans, but I really found that there is some desire for order in all of us, as is the human condition. It was in my exploration, where I also found more balance, working in the Berlin startup space, I came to the realization that too much order can be stifling of creativity, and it is in the happy balance where interesting things happen.

During that time, Joe roped me into doing some consulting for a small wellness startup called Restore. I had consulting to setup their first data stack and was helping them understand marketing ROI and revenue. it was a solid business that I didn’t know that much about. Other than maybe some of whats been going around on the podcast circuits. And I trust Joe. Joe introduced me to our third partner, Lauren over a zoom call, and the three of us decided to take the plunge. I packed up my life in Europe and moved back to Texas.

Coming back after 10+ years away from Texas was a cultural shock. I got a job at Restore Corporate working under the CTO. (I actually predated the CTO in my time as a consultant, I like to say that I was the first tech employee at Restore). My two partners have equally deep roots: Lauren was the very first operational employee and general manager ever hired at Restore, and Joe was their first marketing hire.

I’ve always felt like my identity was shaped by where I lived.
As a kid, I was an immigrant trying to learn how to be American.
Living in China in my 20s, surrounded by locals and Europeans, and the occasional American, I felt very American.
In Germany, (I actually had a lot of Israeli managers, and tech and sales mentors), I still felt American, but really started to adapt to the culture and speak German.
Now back in Texas, I probably feel more German relative to most americans—riding a bike whenever I can, gardening, taking saunas, making time for sunshine, and trying to respect people’s personal time. My management style might be one of my biggest German exports. I really try to make it a part of our team culture to respect people’s space and off-time. Work is just work. We want people to do more of what they love. And that is the overlaying note thru all these identity questions. We are all just human and we are all quite alike.

It took us a year and a half after I moved back to open our location. We’ve gone through plenty of ups and downs. But as a wise old business mentor of mine once told me: “I’ve seen a lot of businesses come and go. It’s hard, but it’s fun. That’s why it’s called business. Otherwise, it would just be called a job.”

Now, we’re turning a new corner with a team I feel blessed every day to have.
What fills my cup is hearing customers talk about how great the atmosphere is, or how much they love the people at our store. And how great they feel after doing our services. I love evangelizing our services to everyone I meet. Cannot get enough of cryo and red light (recommended reading: What doesn’t kill us). Also! if you haven’t heard of NAD+, go look it up. This is something almost everyone should at least try out.

We had one lady with Restore services as part of her regimen, report that she had her bone density increase, at the age of 67!

One guy has a team of doctors and they put him on a NAD+ regimen at our studio and he swears by it. I have since been on NAD+ and I am now also a believer in NAD+. NAD and NR are probably some of the most experimental services we offer, but I have found it super effective.

Our mild Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy has been prescribed to our clients by their doctors as either pre-op prep, or post-op recovery.

I had maybe done some at home masks, but had never had a professional facial before, prior to running a Restore. But now, I probably do one once a year, and am on a 5 step Jan Marini skin routine.

My girlfriend gets migraines, which she used to need to get a doctor’s appointment to get a Toradol shot. Now that she discovered IM shots, she has a peace of mind that she can always get a quick shot at a local Restore if any of migraine symptoms flare up, and can skip the wait at the doctor’s office.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have lost 1 relationship and many nights of sleep. But appreciate that my partners and I can be direct in our communication while bringing modern communication tools to our relationship and relationships with our staff.

I’ve definitely come to really watch interest rates, and market rates for wages.

We take pride in our culture. We have nurses still with us since when Round Rock was still part of corporate in 2018. It has taken a while to build a leadership team, in order to sell to clients, the value we see in our services. But the market has slowly been coming around.

We’ve been impressed with ReachNett Consulting, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am an SAP consnultant in my other life, but we can focus the article on just the Restore business

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I am on the spectrum, or maybe just forever an immigrant, and culturally/socially non-intuitive. So, I have had to hone in trying to empathize and understand people. I have done this by working in the psychology space, as well as playing many games of mafia.

Additionally, I was lucky to have picked up tech and programming skills. I can always find a job, and it is empowering to be able to build things yourself.
