Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Law.
Hi Sarah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My fiancé Joseph Mancha and I had started talking about opening a tattoo studio in 2024 while we were working at different shops. After I was told my last shop was closing earlier this year, we decided it was the perfect time to do it.
We started looking for a location and working on logistics for the shop around March of this year, and we found the perfect spot in Westgate! Our first day open was June 9th, and our grand opening event was on June 21st. We had vendors from all over Austin come out, and we did tattoo flash deals from $60-$100.
We have slowly been getting our name out since then. We hired some super talented artists I previously worked with at another shop, and we are so grateful to have such a good team. Our goal is to provide a safe space atmosphere where everyone feels welcome and comfortable in our shop. We want every customer to leave with not just an amazing new tattoo, but an amazing experience.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Opening up a shop is a lot of work, especially when you’re doing everything yourself. Joseph handled most of the technical aspects of the shop, from zoning letters to getting certified by the health department. I was in charge of the aesthetics of the shop and our social media page. We also worked on almost 20 pieces of hand drawn tattoo flash for the walls. We worked extremely hard for months, and it finally came time to get the keys to the shop. Building the shop was intense, there was one day we worked from 10AM-10PM. Instead of hiring a construction crew, Joseph and his dad constructed and plumbed a piercing clean room on their own. We worked nonstop for about 3 weeks. I went straight from tattooing at my last shop, to constructing the shop, to tattooing again. We are still slowly adding decorations to the shop here and there, but the shop came out exactly how we pictured it and we couldn’t be happier with the atmosphere we have created.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Our artists are all pretty versatile, so we can do anything from tiny fine line tattoos to full body sleeves! We pride ourselves on our dedication to the craft of tattooing, and we pour so much care into our tattoos and our sessions with our clients. We want to be known as a shop where you know you will leave with a good tattoo and a smile on your face. A lot of shops just prioritize getting people in and out of the door, we want every client to get the best art we can provide and have a great experience while they’re getting tattooed.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success to us is making sure both the artists and clients are comfortable and happy. Many tattoo shops just want to make money, our goal in opening this shop was to provide an atmosphere that can’t be found just anywhere. We want to be known as a shop where you can go to any artist in the shop and leave with a good tattoo.
