Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Biggs.
Hi Megan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
After starting my career as an ICU nurse, I was struck by how many young people were coming in with chronic diseases. It felt like we were constantly putting out fires—treating the symptoms, not the root cause. I began to feel that something vital was missing: prevention and early intervention. That’s when I stumbled upon functional medicine. It just clicked—a science-backed, systems-based approach that focuses on root causes and, even more importantly, prevention.
About nine months ago, I met Leah—an incredibly cool pediatric flight nurse who shared a similar passion for getting upstream of disease. Our values and visions aligned instantly, and together we founded The Wellness Refinery.
At The Wellness Refinery, we focus on preventative and longevity medicine, hormone optimization, and everything in between. We’re here to help you not just feel better—but truly thrive.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. We’ve poured countless hours into advanced training, building our practice, and—most importantly—educating our clients about what true preventative care looks like. One of the biggest challenges has been shifting the mindset: helping people understand the power of taking a proactive, comprehensive approach to health before they get sick.
But the response has been incredible. In just 9 months, we’ve experienced tremendous growth and have been truly humbled by the support from our community. At The Wellness Refinery, we focus on preventative and longevity medicine, hormone optimization, and everything in between—empowering our clients to take control of their health and thrive for the long term.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
At The Wellness Refinery, we believe our clinic stands apart from any other in town because we truly integrate the best of Western medicine with a root-cause, whole-person approach—what we define as Integrative Medicine. Unlike many clinics in Austin, we remain very affordable, because we believe everyone deserves access to functional, personalized care and the opportunity to become their own best advocate for their health.
In today’s world of rising overhead and the growing trend of businesses moving fully online, we felt it was essential to maintain a brick-and-mortar location. Having a physical space allows us to stay deeply connected with our community and to offer the kind of in-person, relationship-based care that simply cannot be replaced virtually.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Before I even knew where to begin learning about functional medicine, I started reaching out to functional medicine clinics around Austin just to see if I could shadow someone. I ended up connecting with Dr. Daniel Gonzalez, who turned out to be an amazing mentor. He answered all of my questions and taught me so much — and to this day, he’s still a dear friend.
When it comes to networking, the best approach I’ve found is attending educational conferences and simply sharing my story. That’s really how I started getting plugged in with the right people. The functional medicine community is incredibly passionate and supportive, and being open about my journey has helped me form some really meaningful connections.
