Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Putnam.
Hi Rachel, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
It took me some time to find my path, but I’ve arrived at work that feels both personal and endlessly inspiring. And makes me so so happy! Design pushes me creatively and demands hard work and precision — a balance I thrive on. No matter how much I do during the day, how tired I am from a long day… I still look up and say “I love this”. And that makes me a very lucky person.
I grew up in Springfield, Illinois, in a family that valued both artistry and discipline — my mom’s side are artists, while my dad is a dentist. They shaped me into who I am today. I was also a competitive athlete from a young age, and that experience shaped my drive early on. When I set my mind to something, I learned to work relentlessly toward it — a mindset that carried me through my undergraduate years at the University of Kansas, where I studied Journalism and Italian, through law school at the University of Texas, and into six years of practicing law.
After becoming a mother of two, I felt the pull back to creativity in a big way. I knew I was going back to work in some way, but realized that I can make my passion a successful business. During the pandemic, with two young children, I leaned in fully — I began studying again – I completed design curriculum, I learned rendering software, and ultimately officially launched my design studio at the beginning of this year.
Travel has also shaped my perspective. With Italian roots, I was fortunate to spend time in Europe growing up, where I became fascinated by the way old and new coexist — how a weathered stone wall can feel just as beautiful as a freshly painted door. That juxtaposition between patina and polish continues to inspire me. I’ve always been drawn to color, pattern, and texture, and my passion is layering them with antiques and modern pieces to create homes that feel lived-in, collected, and most importantly, like home. This element of design is ever evolving and pushes me every day. I am constantly looking for inspiration. I love coming across new artists, new fabric designers and love following the work of my fellow designers. And there is always so much to learn … so a sponge I am.
I feel like what sets my work apart is the balance I am able to bring — creativity paired with structure. My background in law taught me to manage complexity, while design gives me the freedom to create spaces with warmth and meaning. No matter the scope — from a full-home furnishing project to a remodel — my goal is always to create spaces that feel beautiful, grounding, and like home.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Of course not! —that’s the fun of it. It has been such hard work, but it’s something I love and something I really really want, and to me, that makes it worth it. Shifting careers, starting a business, and balancing it with motherhood has been a challenge—but the kind of challenge that feels exciting and so fulfilling. Are there so many moments of self doubt, frustration, and sleepless nights?! Absolutely yes. But again, I just keep reminding myself of how much I love this. I give so much of myself to my work, but I am very intentional about holding space to be present with my two little ones. My hope is that they see it’s possible to love what you do, work hard, and still honor the boundaries that keep family first.
The biggest shift for me wasn’t about learning to trust my eye—I’ve leaned on my instincts in that way—it was stepping into the confidence that others would trust it too. Design is so personal, and welcoming someone into your home requires faith. And I recognize that and respect each and every person who trusts me to help them in their journey.
I do feel like I have found the balance between honoring my clients’ wishes but also guiding and nudging them toward the layers and combinations that make a room feel collected and gives it that extra something. As the process moves forward, their trust in the process and their trust in me deepens – and we really create something beautiful.
One of the most rewarding parts of this work has been opening myself up to the unexpected — whether it’s a project that stretches me in new ways or the relationships I’ve built since jumping into this profession. The design community here has been incredible, and I’ve met so many generous and talented people who share their knowledge and creativity. It is so refreshing and heartwarming. Many of the connections I’ve made so far have grown into friendships—and at times, valuable resources—reminding me that we are a community first, here to inspire one another and to lift each other up in the ways we hope to be supported.
I am also very excited that I have several projects that will be being photographed soon. Adding to my portfolio has been a priority of mine since beginning the business.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I take on projects of all sizes — from full-home furnishings to remodels and even one-on-one consultations. Some clients bring me in to transform their entire home, while others just need direction on finishes, layouts, or sourcing. No matter the scope, my goal is to be there for my clients in the capacity they need me… and ultimately help them create a sense of home that is timeless and uniquely theirs.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I don’t find myself that surprising! I guess I will share some interests / details outside of design.
I moved to Austin after college nearly 15 years ago. I had never been here before. I knew no one and had nowhere to live (yet!). It was so exciting and so scary at the same time. Now, I call this vibrant city my home and am so so happy I buckled up for the adventure.
As mentioned, I love to travel and experience new places with my husband and two littles…. but I always love to come home. Home is my comfort place.
I love to play tennis. Growing up a competitive gymnast and volleyball player, I needed something! The gym is NOT my thing. I began playing after my second child was born and it has been such a fun outlet for me. I have met so many lovely people and just a fun thing to get out and do!
My favorite movie is Dirty Dancing… I could listen to that soundtrack over and over again (and sometimes do)… and of course have the occasional dance party.
I love al pastor tacos with extra pineapple 🙂
I have a 4 year old named Beckett and a 6 year old named Vera and they are my sweet little humans who bring me and my husband so much joy.
