We recently had the chance to connect with Thanos Willey and have shared our conversation below.
Thanos, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What are you chasing, and what would happen if you stopped?
I am always chasing my goals and working towards being the best that I can be every day. Stopping that would halt my growth professionally and personally. Stopping is not an option. The best thing to do is to stay consistent and continue moving forward.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Thanos. Back in 1992 my dad got a copy of my birth certificate signed by Stan Lee. I never met Stan, however I have the utmost respect for him. Later on I was able to meet Jim Starlin and Josh Brolin. They were nice enough to sign their signatures alongside of Stan Lee’s on that same copy of my birth certificate. That’s pretty much my Marvel background.
At Thanos X Productions, I engineer, mix, master, and produce videos at The Noiz Faktory Recording Studios in Georgetown TX. I also build and repair equipment there too. In the process of working on equipment, I will produce videos showing how the gear was built or repaired. Fixing equipment and working with electronics is something I enjoy doing and I will continue to grow my knowledge and skills along the way.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
Randy Hudson, Brad Retz, and Jerry Wilson taught me most about work at my first job with KISD-TV. All of them were very experienced in audio, video, and lighting, rigging, and producing live events. They taught me how to record audio, produce videos, how to set up lighting for studio and live events. My biggest takeaway from the time I spent with them was to have a strong work ethic and always strive to be better than you were the day before.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering is perceived as a form of challenge. It teaches me about areas of my life that I may be weak in. The upside to this is that it helps me to identify things that I can work on and strengthen over time.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
One of the people that I look up to is Tom Dowd. He was a physicist, recording engineer, and a producer. He was innovative in his use of multitrack recording and also popularising stereophonic sound. His involvement in The Manhattan Project during World War II and his achievements in the music industry are inspiring to me.
One of the lessons that I learned from Tom Dowd was to work hard and stay consistent. Both are key to accomplishing goals over time. Tom Dowd has influenced me by developing a deep appreciation of physics pertaining to sound and the world we live in. It is a subject that I enjoy studying routinely as it is a part of acoustics as well.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What will you regret not doing?
The only thing I would regret not doing, is not working to achieve my goals and becoming a better person every day. It is imperative to always work towards your goals and continue to grow.
