Lindsey Richardson on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Lindsey Richardson. Check out our conversation below.

Lindsey, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
The first 90 minutes of my day are the craziest! My day usually begins around 5:30 am and is a whirlwind of making school lunches, getting one of my daughters to morning volleyball practice, getting myself ready, waking my other daughter for school, breakfast, and school drop-off again.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Lindsey! Founder, owner, and lead organizer of Tumbleweed Organizing. Tumbleweed Organizing is a professional home organizing business. We organize residential, commercial, and storage units. We also assist with the entire set-up of vacation properties. Every space is unique and meticulously organized to maximize efficiency and function, tailored to each client. I started my business almost 10 years ago in West Texas, specifically the Midland/Odessa area. After a few years, I expanded my reach and advertised my services for all of Texas. Midland/Odessa was home and the base of my business. I’ve recently made a big move, and Tumbleweed Organizing is now local to Bastrop, TX, serving Austin and surrounding cities. I’m excited for what’s to come personally and professionally in this new city I now call home.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
I would have to say my dad. Not only is he a jack of all trades, but he would leave the house every day by 6:30 to work the same job for almost 40 years, and had a side business in the evening until well after it was dark for most of my childhood. He’s since “retired” from his day job but is still working full-time farming. He doesn’t just do a job to get it done; he works hard to make sure that it’s done right. I love organizing, and I work hard to meet my clients’ goals and expectations for every project. And it is my goal that the project is not just “done” but it’s done right. And that the space continues to function in an organized manner for every client after it’s completed.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, before I even got started. When I decided to start my business, life was busy with two little ones running around. And trying to find the time to do all the things starting a business required, I didn’t always have. I’m kind of a perfectionist, which can be a curse in some cases. I kept thinking “I needed to get one more thing done”, or I” didn’t have all the tools needed just yet.” But the truth was, I was worried I would fail, I wouldn’t have any clients, and so I kept coming up with all the excuses “why” I wasn’t ready to launch the business yet. One day, I decided I’m going for it, scared and unsure of what was to come. I told myself I would learn as I go and address any issues that come up as they happen. It’s better to do something scared and see what happens than to do nothing at all. I had my first client within days of promoting my business, and she purchased two of the biggest organizing sessions I offered.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
Absolutely! You get the same person whether you’re family, friends, kids, client, or a stranger I pass on the sidewalk. I’m probably more open and not as reserved with my family, but who’s not? Everyone gets the same version of me. I am who I am, no matter the relationship I have with you. Which is something I really stress with my kids. I want them to be exactly who they are at all times. If you have to be a different version of yourself depending on the people or place, then it’s most likely not a good fit for you anyhow.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. How do you know when you’re out of your depth?
I don’t. It’s probably not a good thing, but I’ve always had an “I can do it mindset” so I usually tackle anything and everything that is thrown my way. Sometimes it ends up being more of a challenge than I anticipated, but I find a way.
