Today we’d like to introduce you to Rocky Stubblefield.
Hi Rocky, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Stubblefield’s BBQ really started as a family dream between my wife Ronda and me. We wanted to carry on the Stubblefield family legacy and share good food, love, and community — the same values I grew up around.
I’m actually the grandson of Christopher B. “Stubb” Stubblefield — the legendary pitmaster and founder of the world-famous Stubb’s BBQ brand. Inspired by my grandfather’s passion for cooking and hospitality, we wanted to continue that heritage in our own way
So when Ronda and I decided to start Stubblefield’s BBQ, the idea was to honor that legacy but make it our own. We wanted to take that same heart and soul that Stubb had, and build something that feels real and family-driven right here in Leander at Wildfire Park.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road — it’s been a real learning process from day one. Running a food trailer comes with a lot of challenges that people don’t always see behind the scenes. From dealing with equipment issues, weather, setup and breakdown, to just figuring out the best systems to keep everything running smoothly — it’s been a journey.
We actually started out just doing catering and special events, moving around from place to place. After a couple of years of that, we decided it was time to find a more permanent home, which led us here to Wildfire Park in Leander. That move came with its own set of obstacles, but it’s also been one of the best decisions we’ve made.
It’s been a slow build — like most small businesses, it takes time — but every week we’re seeing more familiar faces, more new customers, and steady growth. So while it hasn’t been easy, it’s definitely been worth it.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
A lot of what sets us apart comes from my background as Stubb’s grandson. For more than twenty years I’ve been cooking in that tradition and serving as the brand ambassador for Stubb’s — the nation’s top super‑premium line of barbecue sauces and seasonings . That role has given me the opportunity to share authentic Texas barbecue with fans across the country, and it’s taught me the importance of quality, consistency and community.
I’m most proud of how we’ve kept our family story alive. Our trailer is not just a place to eat — it’s a continuation of Stubb’s legacy . We treat customers like family and strive to make every visit feel like a backyard gathering. When people come by our trailer, they get more than just food — they get an extension of the Stubblefield family’s heritage and hospitality . We’ve even introduced our own touches, like our VGS Lemonade named after our daughter, which is becoming a cult favorite . That combination of heritage, hands‑on experience as a brand ambassador, and a genuine love for feeding people is what makes Stubblefield’s BBQ unique
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Ronda and I both grew up in small towns, and when we think back on our childhoods, our favorite memories always come down to one thing — being around family. We grew up out in west Texas, in the Lubbock area, where my grandfather, C.B. “Stubb” Stubblefield, started his first restaurant. Back then, family gatherings were everything — the smell of barbecue in the air, everyone laughing, music playing, and stories being passed around right along with the food.
For both of us, that sense of family and community really shaped who we are. In small towns, people look out for each other — you share meals, lend a hand, and celebrate together. That’s something we’ve carried into Stubblefield’s BBQ. When folks come by our trailer, we want them to feel that same warmth — like they’re part of the family, sitting down for a home-cooked meal.
