Today we’d like to introduce you to Rudy Rexx.
Hi Rudy Rexx, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Started my Jiu Jitsu journey in Feb 2005. After being a competitive bboy traveling worldwide for competition and judging. Also, touring with Local Legends Grupo Fantasma/Brownout Band, I was a percussionist in training and found BJJ kind of by accident.
Shortly after 3 years I started teaching Muay Thai and BJJ at a local academy. Opened our own academy in Jan 2020. Moved from our first location to Burnet rd. One block south of Q2 stadium/Domain.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When you train and teach for a living most of the struggles will come from overtraining. Everything else I’d say is smooth in comparison.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Our Training Philosophy
At Violet Crown Jiu Jitsu, we believe training hard should also mean having fun. While many academies emphasize competition at the expense of atmosphere, we’ve built something different. You won’t find a room full of silent stares and hard attitudes here—you’ll find energy, music, and a community that enjoys the process as much as the results.
Our approach combines intensity with creativity. Drawing on a background in my competitive breakdancing and BJJ days our training incorporates unique movement-based drills and dynamic stretches that translate directly to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Whether it’s takedowns, positional sparring, or technical drilling, we focus on teaching athletes how to move safely and efficiently. This commitment has helped us maintain one of the lowest injury rates around.
Just as important as how we train is who we train with. We’re proud to foster a culture that’s open, welcoming, and free from cliques. Everyone is invited—students, family members, and practitioners from all schools and affiliations across Austin. At VC, competition and camaraderie go hand in hand.
Any big plans?
