Exploring Life & Business with James Guerra of JG Consulting

Today we’d like to introduce you to James Guerra.

James, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
JG Consulting was founded and started on a whim. My previous employer suddenly imploded forcing the company and its employees to pursue other career opportunities. I decided during that difficult time that I no longer wanted to work for another organization or person, and I wanted to be in control of my own professional destiny. I started the company in 2014 operating from a single bedroom apartment in south Austin. The organization is self-funded, and we have not sought any third-party investment in the firm’s history. As of today, we employee 40 individuals nationwide and own an office building in the historic neighborhood of Georgetown, Texas.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road traveled has not always been smooth. Self-funded and bootstrapped organizations will always have one thing in common: having to produce more outcomes with fewer resources. I served as the sole full-time employee for nearly 5-years after the company’s official launch. JG Consulting lacked the fundamental resources to scale; however, a tireless work ethic persevered which eventually yielded financial stability and a team of dedicated professionals committed to the mission and vision of the organization.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Founded in 2014, JG Consulting partners with school systems and city governments to lead executive-level searches and provide other diverse services to support organizational growth.

With years of experience, our leadership team and faculty representatives operate a full suite of search and professional development services — helping you find, place and develop educational leaders who are prepared to make an impact.

At JG Consulting, we believe that the academic success of every learner begins with strong and stable leadership for each school system. Through our core competencies — executive search, executive coaching, leadership development, and strategic planning — we find, place, develop and support pre-K-12 education leaders to ensure they meet the needs of our clients and their communities.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I am the oldest son of Jackie and Joe Guerra. I have one brother, Jonathan. My parents were relatively young (college age) when I was born. I am also the oldest of all grandchildren in my family which meant I was responsible of setting proper examples for my brother and cousins. This family dynamic created a serious and cautious personality. I’m definitely a “Type A” personality. I played three sports starting at the age of 5 through my senior year of high school- baseball, basketball and tennis.
