Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Rodriguez.
Hi Jamie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started college as a government major at UT Austin.
That didn’t go well…
So, after 2.5 years suffering in the Liberal Arts College (no shade, it just wasn’t for me), I successfully switched in Advertising, which is in the College of Communications.
There, I met my co-founder Hua Liu. Creative sparks flew and we knew, eventually, we’d start an agency together.
“Eventually” turned out to be much sooner than we expected, and by March of 2010, we had fired up Tilted Chair.
Nearly 16 years later, we’re still doing it. Frankly, we’re better/smarter/more creative than ever!
We started life as a generalist agency, and still to this day, that’s approximately what we are. No specialties except when human storytelling is required. We do whatever it takes to tell great brand stories to people—with heart, soul, and wit.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In the early days, the challenges were all the ones you’d expect of some twenty-something recent college grads cosplaying as ad men: no money, no experience, and no connections.
The last sixteen years has been spent honing our craft, building relationships, and setting a really high bar for the work we output.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My area of expertise at TC focuses on creative and interactive.
The creative department at Tilted Chair is the largest/most fully developed, and so my focus there is on directing our younger creatives to breakthrough creative solutions WITH the business objective in mind, and then turning around and helping to sell those solutions to our customers.
Our branding work is super sharp, and that’s thanks to the creative minds at Tilted Chair that refuse to produce anything less than stellar work.
Interactive is more of a hybrid/shared department, and so these days, I spend a good amount of time working with our junior developer to turn web interfaces designed in Figma into fully functioning HTML/CSS/PHP/Javascript assets and then integrating those into WordPress. We really do know WordPress inside and out, and so I would consider that to be a specialty: we build beautiful, easy-to-manage, custom (ground up), FAST WordPress websites to modern web standards and with power user usability in mind.
I’m most proud of the relationships I’ve built in the course of doing this work—with both customers AND the people I’ve been fortunate enough to lead here at Tilted Chair.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I just recently launched an all-natural odor elimination line called Odor Exorcism (https://odorexorcism.com). It‘s kinda like the Liquid Death of odor eliminators. And it’s coming for the evil aromas in your home…
