DeShawn Morrison shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
DeShawn, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
The first 90 minutes of my day are all about getting centered. I start with prayer to thank God and ground myself before the day really begins. I take a few minutes to meditate, make my bed, and speak some affirmations over my day. After that, I’ll grab some breakfast and get in a quick workout. It’s simple, but that routine keeps my energy balanced and my mind focused it helps me move through the day with purpose and clarity.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Shxwnfresh, an artist from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, now based in Austin, Texas. My sound blends hip-hop, R&B, and Rap Rock with live energy and emotion. I partner with TankProof to help underserved families, and everything I create is rooted in growth, connection, and purpose
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
I used to think I had to fit into a certain mold as an artist, like I could only make one type of music or appeal to a specific crowd to succeed. Over time, I realized that’s not true. Now I know I can experiment, explore, and stay true to my own voice, blending hip-hop, R&B, and Rap Rock, and still be authentic and successful.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
There was a time I felt like giving up. Nothing was moving, I couldn’t get a show, and it weighed on me heavy. I stayed grounded, true to my beliefs, and focused on God. Soon things shifted. I started getting multiple shows at once, and that momentum carried me into the festival circuit.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The biggest lie the industry tells itself is that there’s only one way to succeed. The truth is real success comes from staying authentic, taking risks, and trusting your own voice.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people remember me as someone who stayed true to himself, made music that mattered, and used his platform to lift others up. That’s the story I want to leave behind. Jesus is king
