Life & Work with Marcus Douthitt of Dripping Springs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcus Douthitt.

Hi Marcus, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am a Mechanical Engineer, that moved to Texas 10 years ago. In Texas I have worked as a metal fabricator/welder for a custom home builder, design engineer for a precision rifle and shotgun shop, metal engraver and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instructor. My journey with my business started in 2013 when I started to train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in North Carolina. Once moving to Texas I trained at several schools until I found the best fit to be Jean Jacques Machado Austin. I trained and eventually began teaching. I taught for JJM for 7 years starting with only a few classes a week up to 25 classes a week towards the end of JJM. The Owners of JJM offered my wife, Laci, and I to purchase the school from them. We jumped on this opportunity, and rebranded as Stoic Jiu Jitsu. We have since moved into a larger 5800sqft facility that includes 2400sqft of mats with a second 500sqft mat space along with a recovery space with sauna and ice bath and a kids room for younger siblings. We are now 3 years into owning Stoic Jiu Jitsu and have a wonderful community of people training with us. We also have a wonderful group of instructors that help my wife and I create a good training environment.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
We have been quite lucky with the journey with our new business running fairly smooth. We had several mentors that have helped us along the way. These people are all from within the school. We have such a wonderful community of people that are always willing to help. The buildout of our new location was one of the more stressful tasks for our business but we have a nice training facility after the buildout was complete. Even through this we had students offering their expertise and help. We are growing our Jiu Jitsu family everyday and welcome anyone interested in being a part of it.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a 2nd deg Black Belt owner of a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu school in Dripping Springs. My wife and I own and run the school together. My wife is also a Black Belt, which allows us to offer black belt level instruction to all. Some women feel more comfortable with a female instructor, and we are able to offer that. We also take pride in our community of students. They are what make the school so special. Our student are training focused in a respectful way to allow everyone to learn, exercise and go to work the next day.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory would be receiving my Eagle Scout. This was a culmination of years of hard work and dedication,
