We recently had the chance to connect with Girlyne White and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Girlyne, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
First order of business: Coffee! Now, I admit, I’m a bit of a coffee enthusiast, so it’s fresh-ground beans for me every morning. But hey, when in need, I’ll settle for a Kopiko instant 3-in-1! 😅 Mornings and I aren’t exactly besties; my day kicks off with a symphony of alarms, and the crack of dawn for me is more like 9 am. Once I finally emerge from my slumber, I head out to give my garden a drink before heading back in to whip up some brunch.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello! I’m Girlyne White, but most people know me as Gigi. I am a digital graphic artist, acrylic painter, and jewelry designer based in Austin, Texas.
My digital creations beautifully blend traditional and contemporary cultural influences, drawing inspiration from my Filipino heritage. My acrylic paintings combine anime elements with Western culture, showcasing my journey as a Filipino American through my signature kawaii style. My cultural art brand, “Puraw Carabao,” honors my Filipino roots and serves as a tribute to my son, who is growing up in a multicultural environment.
In my Asian-inspired jewelry, I love to integrate natural materials such as bamboo, freshwater pearls, and seashells. Additionally, I have a distinctive collection called “Drink it and Wear it,” where I transform recycled bottle caps into art and upcycled jewelry. My artistic expression extends across various mediums, including pyrography and mixed media art.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
When I learned how to climb a tree. I was a very good climber and impressing the university president at my mom’s school at the age of 5 years old made me feel very powerful.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Life will have many turns and not everything will always go your way. Enjoy life, recognize your talents, and your best friend will always be there for you.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
I often ponder this as well, but yep, I show up to the world like an unfiltered selfie—talents, quirks, and all!
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
What’s our grand purpose, you ask? I think we’re here to dive into the variety of life’s experiences! Even with countless influences trying to steer me off course, I’m convinced I’m living my true calling!
