Hi Kayo, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
mi cielo creates handmade clothing for babies, toddles, and adults. We were born out of a love for creating unique clothing for our little one, Tristan. Through his inspiration, our creations turned into a passion to share these unique designs with the little and big citizens of the world.
Each item is carefully crafted from 100% recycled felt that feels great to touch and is hand-stitched to endure the test of time and little ones! We explore. We discover. We never stop our curious minds bringing new ideas and designs into light, and in our fondest wishes, inspire children and adults to smile.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
How to stay true to myself has been a challenge for me. I started creating handmade baby items because I couldn’t find anything original and unique for my son when he was little. All the boys’ clothing seemed dull and stereotypical. As my business grows though, I get offers to expand business in different ways such as licensing opportunities and huge wholesale orders from big box retailers. Through the mistakes I made over the 16-year of running this business, I learned that staying true to why I started this journey is the key, and bigger is definitely not better. Before I say yes or no to any big job offer, I always ask myself these questions now. “Does this offer stabilize my business? Does it interfere with my existing clients? Does it make me happy?”
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am known for creating appliques from recycled felts. My designs are simple yet fun and unique. I was born and raised in Japan, so many people say that my designs very much make them think of Japanese “kawaii” culture.
What I am most proud of is that this whole journey started because I just wanted to dress my own child in a unique and fun clothing. I never dreamed that it would turn into a business! I am also proud that now I have a team of 11 sewing helpers, all moms!! We all hand cut and hand stitch our products every day.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Staying true to what makes you happy. Do not try to be someone or something that you’re not. Yet keep challenging yourself creatively, applying small changes to improve every aspect of your life/business.
