Community Highlights: Meet Bobby King of Skate Ecosystems

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bobby King.

Hi Bobby, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in Austin, studied at Stephen F. Austin and abroad in Shanghai before returning home to start a business. My father got me into construction at a young age and we have had the opportunity to work on all kinds of complex projects from skateparks and water fountains to architectural walls, cave grottos and fish aquariums. We have worked on Texas Historical Sites, State Parks, State Fisheries, Places of Worship, Tech Campuses, Orchards and Sculpture Gardens.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Concrete is rarely an easy trade. I’m always looking to learn things, hopefully the easy way: through repetition and careful observation but there is always grey area in concrete (pun intended). From dealing with wild Texas weather changes and site conditions to variables in new mix designs, material providers, or challenging engineering requirements make this job a constant opportunity to face obstacles and be forced to grow.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We create skateparks and wheel friendly creative spaces for people to connect with the outdoors and each other. Our parks are site specific and wholly original designs that integrate local architecture, native plants and sculptural concrete for both sports and play. We are innovating the industry to make skateparks into cultural landmarks by designing through the lens of art and architecture. Where typical firms are making a McSkatepark of colorful rides for children’s toys that have no architectural significance, we are working to integrate skate spaces into thoughtful park settings through landscape design.

We also do residential concrete work, so this multi-use, performative concrete is accessible to more intimate spaces at home, or in subdivisions, children’s gardens or hospitality settings.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
If you don’t use concrete it’s your own asphalt!
