Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucy Garcia.
Hi Lucy, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was born in Mexico and immigrated to Texas with my family in the early 80s. We were a family of seven, and with my dad being the sole provider, we struggled financially from the start. As an immigrant child, I faced bullying and discrimination regularly. Those experiences made me feel small. I grew up believing that, as a minority, success might never be within reach for someone like me.
Throughout high school, I worked full time after school to help support my family. After graduation, I tried college, but the reality of our financial situation pulled me back into the workforce. In the years that followed, I got married, had two children, and became a single parent working full-time in finance. I wanted to go back to school, but at that time it simply wasn’t an option.
I worked in finance for 10 years, showing loyalty and dedication, but the moment that changed my life was when I was refused a promotion because I didn’t have a college degree. The position was given to someone with a graphic design degree—something unrelated to the field. I felt betrayed and unvalued. But looking back, it was exactly the push I needed.
That rejection lit a fire in me. I made the difficult decision to sell my home, rely on government assistance, and enroll in nursing school. In 2008, I earned my LVN from Temple College. The following year, I was one of only two students accepted into the LVN-to-RN bridge program, and I earned my associate’s degree in 2009.
I started my nursing career at Baylor Scott & White on a MedSurg Acute Care Unit, where I spent 14 years—10 of them as a charge nurse. In 2015, while juggling work and motherhood, I earned my BSN and graduated Magna Cum Laude. I genuinely loved taking care of patients, but over time the hospital environment changed. Staffing shortages, higher patient loads, and constant pressure slowly pushed me toward burnout.
In 2018, I decided to push myself again and pursue my master’s degree to become an Adult Nurse Practitioner. I attended UTA online while still working full time, switching between day and night shifts, all while raising my children and working through the COVID pandemic. It was one of the most challenging seasons of my life. I graduated in 2021 and received my NP license in 2022.
By then, I had reached my mental breaking point and knew I needed a change. I didn’t know exactly which path I wanted my NP career to take, but on a whim—and truly out of exhaustion and hope—I quit my job and decided to open my own practice. In 2023, Legacy Health & Wellness in Temple, TX was born.
Those early days were tough. I worked two PRN jobs to stay afloat while building my business from the ground up. I could only open my office one or two days a week at first, focusing on medical weight loss and primary care before slowly adding more services. It took time, sacrifice, and a lot of faith.
Two years later, I’m now open full time. I no longer rely on PRN jobs. I see patients daily and offer a wide range of medical services, aesthetics, and facials. Being a first-time business owner and sole provider is challenging—taking time off is nearly impossible—but the freedom is worth it. I get to be my own boss, set my own pace, and most importantly, care for patients one-on-one without the politics and pressures of large organizations.
This business has given me purpose. It has allowed me to build relationships, support patients on their wellness journeys, and truly make a difference in my community. I wouldn’t be here without my patients and the unwavering support of my family and friends.
From immigrating with nothing…
To working full-time in high school…
To being denied a promotion…
To becoming a nurse, a nurse practitioner, and now a business owner…
My journey hasn’t been easy, but every struggle led me to where I am today. And I’m proud of the legacy I’m building—one patient, one service, and one brave step at a time.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I for sure had challenges along the way, main ones were being an immigrant, discrimination, bullying, family financial struggles, being a single parent, and building my business and not knowing how to get to where I am today were the main struggles.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
As the Owner and Nurse Practitioner of Legacy Health & Wellness, I focus on the medical aspect of the practice and provide a wide range of services including medical weight loss, primary care, minor and acute care, lab work, hormone replacement therapy, IV therapy, and more. Over time, I’ve built a team of women I trust deeply—women who not only share my vision, but who help make Legacy the warm, personalized space it is today.
My niece, Sam, is our Dermal Filler and Neurotoxin Nurse. She has been an RN for eight years and has specialized in injectables for the past three. Her skill, attention to detail, and passion for aesthetics have brought tremendous value to our practice. Patients adore her, and having family by my side in this journey has been incredibly meaningful.
Our Esthetician, Jasmine, is the newest addition to Legacy and has brought fresh talent and energy to our services. She offers traditional facials, waxing, brow lamination and tinting, laser hair removal, and so much more. Even as a newer esthetician, she has quickly become an essential part of what we offer, and our clients love her work.
And behind the scenes, keeping everything running smoothly, is my middle child—our Office and Social Media Manager, Alyssa. From answering phone calls and booking appointments to managing our online presence, she helps support the day-to-day operations that keep our practice moving forward. Working alongside my family has been one of the greatest blessings of building this business.
At Legacy Health & Wellness, we are proudly family-owned, women-owned, and deeply rooted in the belief that self-care should be accessible. We work hard to keep our services affordable because everyone deserves to look and feel their best—not just those with wealth or privilege. We offer flexible payment options, packages, and plans designed to fit real budgets and real lives.
Our mission is simple: Everyone deserves to make a legacy of lasting health & wellness.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
That I am from Mexico and immigrated from there to Texas at age 5 . The struggles I went through in Mexico were challenging and I am so grateful for how far I’ve come
