Life & Work with Emily Cruz of San Marcos

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Cruz.

Emily, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My hair career took flight in 2018 when I graduated from Hair By Hays cosmetology school’s esteemed high school program. I soared to new heights at Great Clips, mastering cutting-edge techniques and building a solid foundation in the industry. That same year, I had the thrilling opportunity to collaborate with Hair Artist and Makeup Artist Ashleigh Grounds on exquisite bridal looks, elevating my expertise in event styling.

From there, I continued to rise, with a coveted spot at Ron King Salon in Austin, Texas. Now, I’m shining bright as the owner of Yourshearjoy, in my own salon in vibrant San Marcos, Texas, which I launched in August 2023. As I continue to push boundaries and create stunning looks, my passion for hair remains unstoppable.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Opening Yourshearjoy in a cozy San Marcos suite has been a dream come true, but it’s been a journey! As a solo entrepreneur, I’ve faced challenges like setting up shop in a new space, building a client base, and handling everything from bookings to marketing. One of the biggest hurdles was getting the word out and establishing a loyal crew – but word-of-mouth and social media have been amazing!

The biggest struggle has been wearing all the hats – receptionist, accountant, stylist… It’s a lot, but I love the freedom to create my own vibe and serve my clients exactly how they deserve. Now, I’m focused on perfecting my craft and making every visit to Yourshearjoy unforgettable.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in curl-centric hair care and styling, helping clients embrace and celebrate their natural texture. I’m all about enhancing each curl’s unique personality – whether that’s defining a client’s signature look, reviving dryness, or mastering the perfect wash-and-go.

I’m most proud of creating a safe, welcoming space where curlies feel seen and celebrated. My approach is all about education, too – I love empowering clients to care for their curls at home.

What sets me apart is my deep dive into curl-specific techniques and products. I stay on top of trends and innovations, but my focus is always on what works best for each client’s individual curl pattern and lifestyle. If you’re looking for a stylist who gets curls, I’m your girl.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Networking is all about building genuine connections, right? For me, it’s been about showing up, being curious, and giving value where I can. I’ve connected with other stylists through local hair events, workshops, and social media groups, especially those focused on curl specialization.

I’m super lucky to have Ron King & Ethan King as a mentor – working with him in Austin really helped me level up my skills and business approach.

My advice is to:
– Attend industry events and join online communities that align with your niche
– Be willing to learn and ask questions
– Offer help or collaborate with others when you can
– Follow up and stay in touch with connections

Building relationships takes time, but it’s worth it, you grow faster with support!
