Community Highlights: Meet Jonathan Gray of Nonpareil Barbershop

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Gray.

Hi Jonathan , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Well I was born in Frankfurt,Germany to Larry and Edith Gray. We moved a lot while my dad was in the service and our final destination before he retired was Copperas Cove right outside Fort hood army base. I Grew up playing football and track. Around 9th grade year I was injured and was out for the rest of the season. It was during that time I started rebelling, skipping school and running with the wrong crowds. I dropped out the beginning of my 10th grade year with no plans no vision and a chip on my shoulder. I would spend the next 13 years of my life. In the streets wrapped up in drug scene and a menace to the society. It wasn’t until I hit a few solid brick walls and lost some good friends to suicide, gang violence and drug overdoses till I started to see a light at the end of the tunnel. I knew I didn’t want this to be my destiny and I felt a calling to be better. With felonies and a bad rap sheet I wasn’t left with many options for employment. After speaking with my father and him encouraging me to make a change I signed up for Barber College in 2009. I spent the next 15 years changing my life building a good reputation and giving my life to the Lord in 2014. By God’s grace I opened my own shop a year after covid in 2021 with big hopes and aspirations. We have quickly climbed to one of the best shops in the 254 area code with accolades, reviews and many awards to confirm our success. I’m here today to let it be known. If you want something bad enough and you pray ,hustle and get after it you can be just as successful as me. I now have a Salon (HBC Salon suites) and im looking to open a second location for another barbershop.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The man in the mirror. Old habits and old thought processes will keep you chained. I spent so many years building a false narrative of myself. Its taken many years to reinvent and change. I lost my mother a many good friends in the last couple years. Its definitely been a tough road.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Nonpareil Barbershop ?
