Life & Work with Jamie Duplichan of Sunset Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Duplichan.

Hi Jamie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have loved drawing, painting and sculpture for as long as I can remember. It calms me and gives me purpose.
My favorite medium has always been pencil and graphite. All my projects begin there and then I build on it for painting or sculpture.
It high school and several years from there I sold most of my art at fairs and festivals. I did several murals and portraits too.
I learned leather working and had a shop for many years. Most of my more traditional artwork were for gifts and fun.
About 5 years ago I decided to do art full time again. I have a booth now in the Painted Tree on Brodie. I also do quite a few portraits.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Normal artistic struggles of trying to be perfect, navigating marketing and disciplined practice on a regular basis. The same as most artists I guess.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I excel at black and white art like charcoal, pen and ink as well as chalk.
I’m well known for my stipple work. I absolutely love doing it and it’s well received by those who see it.
For the last couple of years I have also gone back to a childhood favorite of chalk on blackboard. I love doing it and the results are very unique.
Quite a bit of my commissioned work is portraits especially pets. Dogs are my favorite.
About once a year I will do a very large wood carving usually as a memorial for someone who has passed. This year I ventured out and did one in stone. It was far more work than I anticipated but I love the way it feels when finished.

What matters most to you?
That I continue to practice and grow. I love challenges and get bored easily if I’m not creating something new.

Pricing:

  • I sell framed prints for $9-$125
  • I do portraits framed and matted for $349
  • Custom tattoo designs usually run $175-$350
