Today we’d like to introduce you to Kia Aird.
Hi Kia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As I photographed friends, musicians, and entrepreneurs, I noticed something: people often had great stories and energy, but lacked visuals that truly represented who they were and what they stood for. This realization paired with my 10+ years of photography led to the opening of Prime Contrast Media. From portrait sessions with local creatives to expanding into videography and interview projects, the business has grown by staying rooted in personal connection, intentional storytelling, and collaboration. Being able to provide these services for people who are enthusiastic about themselves, their work, business, etc…It allows me to admire all new walks of life and dive deeper into my own.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road is usually rocky in the beginning, and that is an exciting part for me. The process has required constant learning, adjusting, and showing up even when the outcome wasn’t clear. From learning how to adapt my style and services, to learning how to communicate value, price confidently, and manage time between a full-time role and a growing creative business, every phase has asked something different of me. I have dealt with imposter syndrome, questions on why I do things, and immediate rejection: none of them have been comfortable feelings to work through. But, instead of giving into self-doubt, I began asking my clients what they could benefit from to ensure that we keep up with mutually beneficial interactions.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Visually, my work is defined by intentional contrast, bold yet clean color, and storytelling through movement and expression. What truly sets me apart is the consistency and care I put into my work. I edit with purpose in mind instead of artistic creation and trends, communicate efficiently so no small details are overlooked, and guide over pose when it comes to portrait and lifestyle sessions. From studio and headshot sessions, live music events, to charity brunches, I focus on creating comfort and trust between me and my clients. This allows for them to not worry about posing and focus on what they need to do/who they need to be.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Living life with intention and integrity matters most to me because I strive to make sure people feel seen, heard, and accurately represented. This stems from my childhood and watching others not speaking up for themselves (myself included) and wanting to do something about it. For me, it was hard to speak up since I was afraid to fail and overall had bad social anxiety. I intentionally took a serving position at 18 to help work through these nerves since I knew I deserved more from myself. Working this job, learning I wasn’t alone in my journey, and meeting people who had the same values as me turned this intentional decision into a confirmation that having strong morals and principles over comparing myself to others is what sustains a meaningful life.
