Hi Sergio, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m the proud owner of Caballero Event Rentals, a family run party equipment rental company here in Leander, Texas. Before starting the business, I spent about 14 years in retail, managing stores across the region and learning the ins and outs of business firsthand. It was a solid run, but eventually I felt ready for something new. I’d always wanted to build something of my own, I just wasn’t sure what that would be.
When I left retail, I decided to go back to school for physical therapy. While I was working toward that, I got licensed in massage therapy, it felt like a natural fit and gave me a chance to learn more about the body. That led to me starting my own mobile massage business, building up a solid client base and eventually working independently without needing a clinic.
Funny enough, it was during those massage sessions when my mind was in a calm, meditative state- that I started brainstorming other business ideas. I kept thinking about what people need every day: transportation, food, medical care… and then I looked over and saw a chair. That moment sparked something. I started thinking, “People need chairs — for weddings, birthdays, festivals, all kinds of events.” That’s when the light bulb went off.
I went home that day, mapped out a plan, and the next morning I bought a trailer and some equipment out of pocket. I taught myself how to build a website, learned SEO ranking, figured out how to market and advertise and leaned on everything I’d picked up during my retail years. I launched during a busy season, which helped me get some early traction. At first, word-of-mouth and repeat customers got things rolling, and I kept reinvesting profits to grow and diversify the inventory.
What’s helped the business grow isn’t just the equipment- it’s the trust, the quality, and the integrity behind everything we do. But honestly, the biggest key has been my faith. Letting God take the lead instead of trying to control everything myself has made all the difference.
It’s been a wild, rewarding journey and it’s still unfolding. I’m excited for what’s next!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, especially in the early years. One of the biggest challenges was learning the seasonal nature of the event rental industry. At first, it’s easy to get excited when business is booming, but I quickly realized that you have to prepare for the “dry desert” months when bookings slow down and income drops. Learning how to budget, save, and plan ahead became crucial.
Then came COVID, which hit the industry hard. With strict limits on gatherings, sometimes only 10 people allowed. Our sales and orders dropped dramatically. We had to make tough decisions, cut overhead expenses, and find ways to stay afloat. It was a test of endurance, but we made it through and came out stronger.
Even now, there are still obstacles we’re learning to navigate. Every season brings new lessons, and every challenge helps us sharpen our approach. It’s a process, you keep moving forward, keep improving, and trust that with time and effort, you’ll get better at what you do.
