Daily Inspiration: Meet Clarissa Branham

Today we’d like to introduce you to Clarissa Branham.

Hi Clarissa, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up in Texas, homecoming mums have always been a special tradition. In the 1990s, I loved making mums for my family and friends, drawn to the creativity and meaning behind each one. After high school, life took me in a different direction, and I set that passion aside.

Years later, when my children entered high school, my love for mum-making returned. I taught myself modern techniques, learned from other makers, and rediscovered the joy of creating pieces that celebrate school spirit. What began as a personal passion has grown into a small business, allowing me to share that creativity with others through custom mums and school spirit items made from the heart.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting a small business is never a smooth road. From learning ribbon types and managing inventory to creating eye-catching designs and bringing a client’s vision to life, the process comes with constant challenges. In 2024, that journey was unexpectedly paused when I was diagnosed with cancer in the middle of homecoming season.

Thanks to the patience and understanding of my incredible clients, I was able to step away for treatment and return with renewed gratitude. Their support reminded me why this work—and this community—means so much to me.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in designing custom homecoming mums, and I’m best known for my signature glitter cardstock cutouts. These cutouts are personalized details inspired by each student—reflecting their interests, clubs, and activities. I take great pride in designing every piece to be a true and thoughtful representation of who they are, making each mum as unique as the student wearing it.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
My advice for anyone interested in making homecoming mums is to explore different styles and discover what best reflects your creativity. There are many generous makers on YouTube who share their techniques—this is where I learned to create many of the braids I use in my designs. I also recommend joining a homecoming mum group on Facebook to connect with local makers. Having a community to exchange ideas, ask questions, and seek guidance makes all the difference. Most importantly, find a mentor.
