Today we’d like to introduce you to Tim Cuppett.
Hi Tim, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I decided in the third grade I wanted to be an Architect after walking through the coolest house I’d ever seen; design has been my passion every since.
After a few years gaining experience in a large commercial firm, I decided I only want to make houses. Since 2000 I and my team have designed only “single-family” homes for home-owners. The office has grown slowly as I like to be involved with each project. In 2015 I welcomed Dave Kilpatrick as a business Partner to help manage the ever-increasing load. We have built a strong team with many different skill sets….And our work is better, together! We are now doing much of the Interior Design on our homes because it is so fulfilling.
We focus on giving our best effort to each project. We listen. We have good track record of doing what we say we’ll do. We still learn on every job, with time it gets better and better.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Generally, we’ve had a smooth ride; slow and steady has been the course.
Once upon a time I experienced a communication break-down with a client and learned how important it is to listen to the details and watch for nuances in body language. It takes skills of emotional intelligence to design a personal home.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Cuppett Kilpatrick Architecture + Interior Design?
Cuppett Kilpatrick is a full service Architecture and Interior Design practice, with a residential portfolio spanning two decades. We design single family homes for home-Owners. Our job is to marry the goals of a family to a specific place, the site. A word used to describe our work is Gezellig. It is rooted in traditional forms of hearth and home interpreted in a quiet modernism. Homes are sensitive to site and climate, expressing a respect for and drawing inspiration from context. “Consult the genius of the place…” by Alexander Pope is the benchmark quote on which we focus.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Artificial Intelligence will take some of the burden of visual communication, but human connection will remain critical to our process. I cannot speak for the industry and I try very hard to resist trends. I often say “if it’s popular right now, let’s stay away from it.” I know in 5 years it will be dateable.
