Today we’d like to introduce you to Danna Flores.
Hi Danna, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my business, Handlevat, when I was 12 years old. I’ve always loved being creative, especially working with my hands, and jewelry became a meaningful way for me to express that creativity. What began as something fun I did at home quickly grew into a passion as I fell in love with the entire process — from designing and packaging to sharing my pieces with others.
As I got older, I began teaching myself how to run a real business. I learned branding, social media marketing, customer communication, and how to work with influencers through hands-on experience. Balancing school, dance, and owning a business hasn’t always been easy, but it’s helped me develop discipline, confidence, and strong time-management skills at a young age.
Along the way, I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with influencers and be part of large creator events, including The Glow House and Lucas’s one-million-follower celebration. These experiences helped expand Handlevat’s visibility and allowed me to learn how to navigate brand partnerships and collaborations while connecting with new audiences.
In addition to selling online, I focus heavily on building in-person connections. I participate in local markets nearly every weekend, where I’ve grown a loyal customer base through face-to-face interactions. I also vend at CPD dance competitions, as well as select dance conventions and studios, which allows me to connect directly with dancers and creatives who align closely with my brand. These experiences have played a major role in growing Handlevat both online and offline and in building a strong sense of community.
Today, Handlevat has grown into something I’m incredibly proud of. I’ve worked with creators, built a supportive community, and continue to evolve the brand as I grow personally and professionally. I’m still learning every day, but I’m grateful that something I started at such a young age has become such an important part of who I am and where I hope to go in the future.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. Starting a business at such a young age came with a lot of challenges. I had to learn everything on my own through trial and error, from pricing and inventory to marketing and customer communication.
One of the biggest struggles was balancing everything at once — school, dance, and running a business. There were moments where it felt overwhelming, especially when things didn’t go as planned or when growth was slower than I hoped. A big reason I’ve kept going is because running Handlevat supports my dance journey — my goal of becoming a professional dancer motivates me to stay disciplined, manage my time well, and keep pursuing both passions.
I’ve also faced self-doubt at times, questioning whether I was doing enough or if people would take me seriously because of my age. But those challenges pushed me to work harder, learn faster, and believe more in myself.
Every struggle has helped shape me into a stronger entrepreneur, and they’ve taught me patience, resilience, and confidence — lessons I know will stay with me far beyond my business and my dance career.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Handlevat is a handmade jewelry brand I started when I was 12 years old, built around creativity, individuality, and meaningful design. What began as a small passion project has grown into a brand focused on creating jewelry that feels personal, wearable, and expressive.
I specialize in charm jewelry and curated pieces that allow customers to tell their own story through what they wear. Each piece is thoughtfully designed to feel special while still being everyday-friendly. Handlevat is known for its clean, soft aesthetic and for creating jewelry that feels both trendy and timeless.
What sets Handlevat apart is the heart behind the brand. Every part of the business is run by me — from design and branding to packaging, social media, and collaborations. I focus heavily on building genuine connections with customers and creators, making the brand feel personal rather than transactional.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud of how Handlevat has grown organically through community and creativity. Being able to collaborate with influencers, work with other brands, and see people wear something I created at such a young age is incredibly meaningful to me.
I want readers to know that Handlevat is more than just jewelry. It’s about self-expression, confidence, and starting before you feel “ready.” My brand represents taking creative risks, believing in yourself, and growing alongside something you love.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I believe luck has played a role in my journey, especially through supportive people and opportunities that helped me grow at a young age. At the same time, I’ve faced moments that felt like bad luck, such as slow sales or setbacks, which taught me important lessons.I’ve learned that while luck can open doors, consistency, hard work, and willingness to keep going are what truly make the difference. I’m grateful for both the good and bad experiences because they’ve shaped me as a business owner and helped Handlevat grow.
