Today we’d like to introduce you to Darrin Hammons.
Hi Darrin, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Over the years I’ve dabbled with making flower arrangements, for our kids weddings, flowers in the individual rooms of our hosted bed & breakfast, intimate weddings we’ve hosted here…
Nearly four years ago, I stopped in to goodbye to the local florist, who was moving outside of Houston to be closer to family. I made a random comment about wishing I had spent more time in her flower shop, and the next thing I knew, I was buying her flower coolers and starting a floral business!
While I have owned two other businesses, I had no real experience in the commercial side of a floral shop! On top of that, we opened two weeks before Mother’s Day, one of the busiest holidays here in Canyon Lake!
We ran out of flowers one day, another day we ran out of vases, and my husband had a melt down after delivering flowers to the same street 4 times in one day!
We have come a long way from making floral arrangements in the kitchen while the shop was being built. By providing quality arrangements for weddings, personal events, funerals, the individualized customer service and participating into the state floral association, we have steadily grown!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The floral shop cash flows differently than our other businesses, which created a learning curve for managing expenses, flowers to order, hardships and additional staff, especially during the flower holidays,
For me personally, it’s hard for me to ask for help, so it was hard to hire and delegate tasks to my staff. Fortunately, we work well together, so it’s getting easier!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My background was in the medical field, then transitioned to massage therapist (still practicing over 31 years), and owner/operator of a hosted bed and breakfast.
The floral shop satisfies my creative side! From gleaning the idea or vision of the client during a short phone call, to working with beautiful flowers and creating a smile on the recipients face.
I feel that in all of our businesses, the skill of listening, asking the right questions, and providing genuine customer service, is what our clients remember and what makes them come back for our services.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Not sure it’s been luck…. Like many people, I’ve had my share of challenges over the years.
I am a two time cancer survivor, and I feel that early detection, a positive attitude and openness to possibilities has certainly played a part in both my survival and in my life successes!
These life experiences have created opportunities to connect with others and encourage them on their journey. People like doing business when they feel a sense of connection.
