Today we’d like to introduce you to Steven Piper.
Hi Steven, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Starting in 2014, I started reaching out to various artists all over the world to commission them to create custom artwork for limited-edition screen-printed movie posters. Over the next 10 years I developed relationships with well-respected artists who have created some well-known and sought after art. Including those that were then used for Blu Ray and record covers from boutique labels.
In 2024 I was offered a chance to take over the lease from an independent bookstore in Taylor, TX, Curio Mrvosa. They had grown out of the space, but it was a perfect location for a permanent gallery. Since then, I’ve hosted regular gallery shows and traveled across the country to sell original art and limited-edition posters.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Opening a pop art gallery in small town Texas can be challenging. But, I’ve been lucky to have been around for a while, gathering a reputation that ensure each and every gallery show I host is well attended with additional online support for those outside of the immediate Austin area.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Raised working in a video store since I was a preteen, I gained a big appreciation for movie art. Day after day and year after year I stocked and sorted through the ever-changing styles of great films. Moving to Austin in the early 2010’s was the prime years for enjoying films at the Alamo Drafthouse. Each and every movie poster exhibited on their walls from the original Mondo Gallery gave me a big appreciation for the artwork they helped produce. I’m doing my best to continue in the spirit of what they established.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
One of the most important lessons that we have learned is not to do what other Galleries are doing. We try to do different kind of shows for different titles. One recurring show we’ve put on for two years now, involves custom VHS boxes. We’re not going with what is most popular, but instead curating film titles and mediums that might have not have as much consideration.
