Life & Work with Karlie Hall of San Marcos

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karlie Hall.

Hi Karlie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always really enjoyed documenting different things. I remember being a kid and my parents would let me use their point-and-shoot camera. I always made everybody do photo shoots of us just being silly.
My parents got me my first camera probably in 2010. Seven years later I had my first son and wanted so badly to capture every little moment of him changing and growing. And honestly, my picture sucked. Haha I had no idea how to use my camera and gave up after trying a few times.
Fast-forward to 2020 and I was sitting with God about the new year. I felt like I was supposed to pick up my camera and not give up this time. And that’s how Karlie Hall photography began!
It was a lot of practicing and a lot of failing. This is my six year in business and I am amazed at the growth and how much I’ve changed.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Honestly, it was actually pretty smooth. I think because I was surrendered to whatever God was doing, it brought a lot of peace.
Sure, I would get frustrated and compare myself, but I think that’s pretty normal in the creative world.
I also have literally the best clients! After six years in business, I can say that I’ve had such a joy with every single person I’ve gotten to work with!
The challenging part has been trying to navigate running a business and adding kiddos to our family. The juggle of Mom, life, and homeschooling, and growing my business is still a challenge.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am primarily a family, Maternity and newborn photographer, but also have the joy of capturing weddings and seniors.
I definitely have more of a documentary lifestyle feel to my pictures. And think something that sets me apart is you can feel the connection and joy the people have in the picture.
several years ago, my son saw a picture of me and him cuddled up next to each other. He could see our connection in love and that has continued to be my “why”.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
if you are a photographer, find what area of photography makes you come alive. Trends come and go, but stay true to what makes you feel something.
For non-photographers do the pictures! Find someone that’s work, inspires you and do it.
Life changes, way too quickly to not document the season you are in.
