Today we’d like to introduce you to Freddie Bustinza.
Hi Freddie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born in Brownsville, Texas, on October 4, 1982, to a single immigrant mother. Growing up, I witnessed her tireless dedication as she worked two to three jobs to provide for our family, especially as my younger siblings joined us. My father, who was estranged and faced mental health challenges, was a talented artist with some of his works featured in the Smithsonian. My mother’s unwavering work ethic profoundly influenced me; I admired her rise each day at five in the morning and her return home late at night, all for the sake of our well-being.
Throughout high school, I maintained straight A’s, but I realized that I lacked the discipline and guidance necessary for college. Consequently, I made the pivotal decision to enlist in the military in 2002, which turned out to be one of the best choices in my life. The military instilled in me values of discipline, resilience, courage, honor, and commitment—traits that continue to guide me today. As a Fleet Marine Force Hospital Corpsman during multiple deployments, the most challenging experience was my combat deployment to Iraq in 2008. Thankfully, I navigated that difficult period, although I now manage some health issues related to my service, I find support through the VA, which takes good care of veterans. I obtained both my associate and bachelor’s degrees through the military. I left the military in 2015 for better opportunities and received an honorable discharge.
After my military service, I spent six years in corporate America, which allowed me to experience living in seven major cities across the country—an adventure I cherished. However, as I grew older, I recognized that the demanding hours left little room for a fulfilling life. When my mother informed me that my brother was stepping down as CEO of Con Madre Cocina, I seized the opportunity to express my goal of fostering growth and community engagement in Austin through our business. In the last five years, we have navigated numerous challenges, including the impact of COVID-19, fluctuating product costs, and political and environmental uncertainties. This year, I undertook a comprehensive reorganization and restructuring of our company to lay a solid foundation for future growth. The popularity of our establishment is largely due to my mother’s exceptional cooking, which she oversees, while I manage the business aspects in the background.
Our primary objective moving forward is to cultivate a strong sense of community in the Travis Heights area and throughout Austin in both of our locations. We aim to be actively involved with local schools and neighborhoods, fostering human decency and respect for all. As a Gay Combat Veteran and Austin business owner and restaurateur, I am committed to creating a sense of community through our company and strengthening our relationships with our neighbors. I look forward to a successful future in 2026 and beyond in Austin, Texas.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?

I love that we are such a foodie city! There are all types of different cuisines to taste everywhere! The traffic and construction in many cities to be quite challenging, though I understand that these issues are common in urban areas.
