Rising Stars: Meet Spencer Welch of Temple, Tx

Today we’d like to introduce you to Spencer Welch.

Hi Spencer, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was always an artsy person, always drawing and creating but never anything serious. One day, after my oldest daughter was born, my husband saw some of my drawings and believed I had talent! He encouraged me to become an Artist, and I began studying and learning and taking things a bit more seriously. Fast forward a few years, I started sharing on Instagram. This was in 2018, when social media was much different, and people started asking me for commissions. I never really had a plan for my business, I still don’t…I just paint and pray and trust in Gods plan for me. I look forward to seeing how far He takes my work into the world! I believe art is incredibly important, especially in times like these.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, the art world and life of an artist can be really difficult. My biggest hurdles are mental and emotional ones, like feelings of low self-worth and wondering if my work is “good enough”. Despite the difficulties, I continue to move forward. I take risks, I do things that scare me, and I trust that I will make it through, thanks to my faith and belief that God has a plan.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
In the beginning of my art journey I painted with watercolor, I did a lot of pet portraits! I focus more on oil now, but I also play with other mediums. I really love painting people, but I also paint flowers and landscapes too. Every time I have a new idea, I try to execute it! I don’t want to box myself in, creativity shouldn’t have a limit. I am proud of myself for all of the times I have stepped outside of my comfort zone to try something new, like embroidery and collage. This is how we grow!!

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
I wish I kept all of my old work. I made so much bad art…which is normal! But I would get frustrated and throw them away or rip them up. I wish I kept them! Then I could measure my growth. If you keep going, you will get better, and you will learn so much. Being an artist is a practice, you’re in it for the long game! Don’t let the idea of having fame and fortune, or not having it, stop you from going after your dream.
