Meet Lucy Leora of Georgetown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucy Leora.

Hi Lucy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I come from a line of photographers. They probably wouldn’t call themselves that, but the hundreds of film negatives and slides I have of theirs says otherwise!

I started photographer really young, and then eventually moved on to get my degree in it. I’ve dabbled in various forms of photography, but currently my love and passion is wedding photography.

I took a break for about 8 years when I worked in a corporate job. When I had my 2 sons right before and during the pandemic, I no longer found purpose in what I was doing. I quite my corporate job, and immediately started doing photography again full time.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have had a very blessed journey in my photography. While I wouldn’t call it smooth, it definitely provided for us in ways other jobs can’t.

Some of the struggles have been navigating a continuously changing wedding market in the peak of a pandemic, raising a child with disabilities, and finding the balance of growing my business while being present for my children.

With that being said, those challenges alongside my faith has been a great journey of learning who I am.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in Quiet Luxury Wedding Photography! I have a very specific style of documentary and slightly cinematic moments. My goal is to communicate the story of my couple’s lives and their values. I do my best to steer clear of corporate wedding styles and focus on creative conversations that can be had in their photography.

I am incredibly fortunate to have a line of photographers before me. Because of that, I have photos of family members from over a hundred years ago. I recognize that it is a rare privilege. I’m proud to be able to educate my clients and provide that for them. I don’t just deliver their photos in a weblink. My goal is to encourage them to preserve these forever so they last as long as my own family’s photos.

I set myself apart from others by not only providing quality images but also creative ones. I do not photograph to be popular on social media. I feel like I am doing a disservice to my clients if they think that is the end goal. I want my imagery to be honest about who they are and highlight the best of them.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I was formally trained! Over the past several years, I have found it increasingly rare to find creatives who have undergone formal artistic education, given how many online resources we have.

While I think that is amazing and I’m so glad people have access to that, I do believe that my experience has given me amazing opportunities to pursue wedding photography.

With my education, I’m not just learning photography; I’m also learning painting, design, sculpture, ceramics, and screen printing. These may seem excessive and over the top to learn photography, but learning these skills in conjunction with my camera has given me the ability to be flexible in my creativity and give shape to the world around me. From there, my photography skills fall into place. My seemingly 1 skill now suddenly has endless opportunities.
