Daily Inspiration: Meet Andrew Freeman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Freeman.

Hi Andrew, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Andrew Freeman and I’m an author and former journalist. Now I’m the founder of Freeman Creatives, a multimedia content venture where I help small businesses and brands tell their own stories.

I’ve always been a storyteller. I learned how to read at a very early age and couldn’t put books down. Very quickly, reading stories wasn’t enough and I eagerly began creating my own. I wrote all kinds of things through elementary and middle school, and even wrote my first full length fantasy novel in high school. It was there I also fell in love with journalism. It was something I seemed to have a knack for, as I went on to compete in state competitions and even became the editor of our school paper.

When I went to college, while I desired to be an author, journalism felt like a natural and solid career choice. It was there I discovered the joy of television news, choosing to pursue broadcast journalism. After all, video was just yet another layer of storytelling where I could flex my creative muscles. My words could say one thing, and video could show yet another. Twice the fun, in my opinion.

After college in 2016, my first reporter job was in southern Oklahoma. I wasn’t very happy to be in such a small, rural market at the time, but looking back, I’m really happy it was my first job. I really did learn a lot! I then went to Upstate New York, where I reported through the George Floyd protests and the pandemic. I covered a lot of big news there, and was ultimately there for five years.

In New York, I also officially published my first book, “Welcome to Wis’ Apothecary.” The coming-of-age light fantasy series is about a young witch’s apprentice who helps her teacher run a potions shop. I went on to publish a second, and am now working on a third.

In 2023, I was finally able to return home to Texas, where I accepted a television reporting role in Austin, Texas. I covered the impeachment trial of Ken Paxton, two legislative sessions and countless special sessions. At the end of my tenure, I was in Kerrville covering the devastating flooding there. But in 2025, after nearly a decade in the industry, I decided to step away. I had many reasons, but when you boil it down, I was just ready for a change.

But the question was… what to do next? I had all of these multimedia production skills, and a desire for more time to pursue my own creative interests and invest more in my book series. It started with some freelance jobs here and there: creating content for my aunt’s wedding business, doing social media for an out-of-town comedian visiting Sixth Street. When I began helping a friend with his real estate company, that’s when I decided to formally launch Freeman Creatives.

I believe everyone has a story. I’ve been telling people’s stories my entire life. But now I do it on my own terms, in a fresh and exciting way. I had a lot of encouragement along the way, and my own book editor has been a huge mentor to me. While I now do advocacy work full-time, Freeman Creatives is still growing and building. I’m thrilled to have so many passion projects. Being creative is what it’s all about. If I can be creative every day, then I can certainly be happy.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Ask any journalist, and they’ll tell you it’s not a profession for the faint of heart. Long hours, no holidays and breaking news can pull you away from anything or anyone at a moment’s notice. And then, well, there’s the pay. Of course, journalists will also tell you we don’t do it for the money.

Still, the dedication to the craft often meant multiple jobs, sacrificing time with loved ones and moving to a new place every couple of years. Then there’s the job itself, where the news is just as taxing as the long hours and newsroom disagreements over delivery and execution are rife because everyone is so passionate about the final product… and the communities we serve.

Even still, the decision to leave wasn’t easy. And after I left, I had to really hustle to make ends meet while I got Freeman Creatives off the ground. I didn’t get to do anything fun for months, it felt like, and often my dinner was rice and beans. But you know what? Freeman Creatives sparked the fulfillment I was missing in my final months of journalism, and now I can honestly say I’ve never been happier.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As a multimedia content specialist, I specialize in a variety of digital content, but I’m perhaps best known for my video editing abilities. Not just composition, but editing to tell compelling visual narratives in both short-form and long-form formats. Whether it’s a :30 second TikTok Reel or a 15 minute YouTube vlog, you can count on clean, fast and professional editing to bring YOUR story to life.

After ten years in journalism, I know how to identify the video and sound which will connect people and elevate voices. And while I’m most proud of my creative writing, it doesn’t stop there: blogs, catchy captions or even press releases too. If you need something shot or written, my diversity in experience sets me apart among other content specialists.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I’m a third degree black belt in Isshinryu Karate! It’s yet another craft I’ve dedicated more than a decade of my life to, and something I’m very passionate about. To be creative, you also have to take care of your mind, body and spirit! I’m also a bit of a tea connoisseur (some might say tea snob), and vegan of eight years!
