Today we’d like to introduce you to Holly Malish.
Hi Holly, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My career began in manufacturing in San Antonio working in the marketing department. After a few years, I took the advice of my father and applied for a job at the San Antonio Chamber. Nine
months into the job, I ran into a colleague from the manufacturing days who worked at the New Braunfels Chamber, who were currently hiring for an economic development coordinator. I didn’t know economic development, and she said it was sales and marketing. I said I knew that! and later was hired. Spent 15 years at the New Braunfels Chamber honing my skills. Started out as coordinator and eventually moving up to Director, overseeing marketing, research, business retention and special projects. During that time I was building a life outside of work. The time came that I wanted to understand more about the city-side of economic development and was hired as the Deputy Director of Economic Development in Schertz. After 2.5 years there, the position in Lockhart opened up and I was then hired as the Executive Director.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There were definitely challenges along the way. I encountered some challenging management styles, some generational challenges with technology. At times, there were moments of workplace politics and competition – some environments were more collaborative than others.
I definitely had to develop a thick skin in certain roles. I like to say it’s been a character-building journey.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
As an Economic Development Corporation, our role is to leverage private investment for the long-term vitality of our city. My focus as the Executive Director is on creating strategic growth — attracting the right businesses, supporting the ones already here, and making smart investments that strengthen both our economy and our quality of life. My strengths include a well-developed professional network built over the course of my career, the ability to leverage those relationships effectively, and the tenacity to see projects through to completion.
What Lockhart does well is recognizing it is about more than incentives. It’s about relationships, timing, and vision. We work closely with entrepreneurs, industry leaders, developers, and regional partners to resolve obstacles for business growth and create opportunity. Whether it’s infrastructure improvements, business recruitment, or workforce alignment, our goal is sustainable growth that benefits the entire community.
What are your plans for the future?
While we are guided by a 5-year strategic plan, the past two years have been foundational, and putting the right building blocks into place. Looking ahead, the focus shifts to execution—leveraging those tools, partnerships, and plans to attract investment, support local businesses, and ensure thoughtful, long-term growth.
I think one of the most exciting things is seeing the West End Redevelopment Project come to fruition because it represents the next phase of progress for the community. It’s an opportunity to thoughtfully redevelop an under-utilized area of town, attract the right investment, and create a place that supports both local businesses and residents alike. There is the opportunity to breathe new life into an that area while still respecting the character and identity that make the community unique.
