Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica “Brooke” Vanderberg-Beauvil.
Hi Jessica “Brooke”, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
After retiring from 20 years of Active service in the Army and deciding to settle for good in Nolanville with our younger children, we noticed Nolanville didn’t have a local coffee shop where neighbors could gather over a great cup of coffee. For many residents, finding specialty drinks or small snacks meant traveling outside the area or local gas station. JavaKiss coffee shop was created with a vision to provide our community with a welcoming space to connect, relax, and enjoy quality coffee right here at home. Our oldest daughter, Skylar, has been a barista and in food service/customer service with several companies for almost 10 years and was living many miles away with our son-in-law who is serving in the Air Force. At a certain point, things aligned for her to relocate back to this area and start putting in the leg work of selecting everything from roasts to equipment. From the start, the intent has been to hire locally and establish ourselves as a staple community partner. My cousin Chisa designed our logo, Skylar thought pink would be a great idea, and everything started coming together. Our family’s support in every facet has gotten us off the ground. The city of Nolanville, Linnemann Stahlings Construction, community partners, other small businesses and parterships have provided a wonderful foundation for Javakiss to thrive! Like many new businesses, we spent time learning what our customers enjoyed most from our menu. As we listened to feedback, we refined our offerings and recently added new items that pair well with some of our best sellers, including our signature beignets. As a retired combat veteran in this veteran-heavy region, it was also important to me to have a “non-veteran themed” but veteran-friendly space for veterans to relax and be able to let their guard down without being triggered. The aesthetic from LSC and Skylar that came together is the perfect blend! Since our grand opening November 12, 2025, we have hosted children’s book readings, realtor meetings, meet the candidate events, Nolanville city events, and become a space available to reserve for community use. We have been fortunate to also have sponsored and been asked to sponsor events within the community. We are extemely grateful for the opportunity to continue a family legacy of entrepreneurship in the next generation of our family, and couldn’t be more appreciative of the support and encouragement from every angle.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has definitely not been smooth! The buildout process ran into both expected and unexpected delays beginning with only a shell. This had a really big impact and cost a lot of money we couldn’t recoup – such as rushing to buy equipment for opening only to keep having opening delayed and run out the warranty period or return periods. After opening, the biggest struggle was targeting optimal operation hours and balancing the needs of the community. Thankfully, we’ve partnered with AEG and Darwin Tanksley who has not only provided mentorship and business savvy, but has been a convicted fan of Javakiss in setting us up for success. In hindsight, having never run a business of this nature before, we should have absolutely retained a consultant throughout the process; it would have saved time and money. Biggest lesson – expect delays!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a 20-year Army combat veteran and retired officer that served as a medic/EMT and went on to complete my master’s degreee as a Physician Assistant (PA-C), finishing my career as an active duty medical provider. After retirement, I obtained Texas teaching certification and taught Health Sciences at Shoemaker High School in Killeen, Texas for 2 years. I have since returned to medicine, and am practicing locally. Although I have no direct experience in ownership or starting a brick and mortar food establishment, my daughter Skylar has a comprehensive understanding of what would be required and more with her varied work experience in both restaurant and customer service positions. She is most known for her really bright, engaging personality, and her ability to always be on the bright side – even if it sounds cliche! What sets Javakiss and our family apart is our generational service to the United States of America, including service in every war, an appreciation for the good times when family is together and can let down their guard, and the strong sense of community and engagement to add value to the residents of Nolanville and anyone who stops in to give us a try! The baristas who have been steadfast with us since the very beginning are ALL phenomenal women who each bring a different, but absolutely necessary vibe of welcome, friendly, and real belief in our company’s success. They are constantly creating, suggesting, and doing so much more than required because of their investment in us. If nothing else, I can’t let them down!
How do you think about luck?
I don’t believe in luck – luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity! I believe my foundation and core Army uprbringing prepared me to take on the challenge of being level-headed, intuitive, business savvy, and able to communicate effectively coupled with my daughter’s creativity and intricate knowledge of the industry allowed us to be positioned to take advantage of a prime location and provide a needed safe space, and unique vibe to the city of Nolanville.
