Today we’d like to introduce you to Mackenzie Anderson.
Hi Mackenzie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Mackenzie Anderson is an Austin-native and a graduate of Texas State University with a degree in Communication Studies.
While working for a senior-focused healthcare company, she became aware of the complex inner workings of Medicare. Since then, Mackenzie has been serving those who are currently on Medicare, or those approaching their 65th birthday, understand Medicare and assisting them with making informed choices. Medicare is complex and ever-changing. Mackenzie helps simplify the decisions people need to make in order for Medicare to work for them as well as possible.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, not at all. Starting any new business comes with uncertainty, and the beginning was hard. Navigating the complexities of Medicare — along with all of the changes that happen every year, or even within a year — takes a lot of research and constant attention.
What kept me going was that I genuinely love this work. I enjoy working directly with seniors to help them understand their Medicare options, and I really enjoy teaching. That goes a long way.
I also have to credit my clients. They are truly wonderful people, and I would not be where I am today without them. Certain times of the year are more demanding than others, especially in the fall, but when you truly enjoy what you do and care about the people you serve, it makes all the difference.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I founded Premier Medicare Solutions in July 2017, and Medicare has been my primary focus ever since. I specialize in helping people navigate their coverage options — Medicare Supplement, Medicare Advantage, and prescription drug plans — as well as ancillary products that can fill in the gaps and get you closer to the kind of comprehensive coverage you may have had when you were employed.
A few things set me apart. First, because I work with all three plan types rather than just one, I am required to recertify every single year. Medicare beneficiaries are considered a vulnerable population, so agents like me are held to a fiduciary standard. That matters, and I take it seriously.
Second, my relationship with my clients doesn’t end at enrollment. I am there from the very beginning to the very end. If you have a billing issue, a problem with your doctor’s office, or a question about your prescriptions, I help you work through it. That’s just part of the job for me.
It’s also worth knowing that we are not allowed to charge for our help with Medicare — that’s a contractual requirement. We also can’t cold call, go door-to-door, or use traditional sales tactics. That’s not how this works. If someone is working with me, it’s because they chose to reach out, and I think that changes the entire dynamic of the relationship.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
This isn’t necessarily something I learned for the first time through this journey, but it has absolutely been reinforced: you have to treat people with respect, and they need to respect you in return. Medicare is a deeply relationship-based field. The stronger your relationships with your clients, the more comfortable they are with you, and the better the overall experience is for everyone.
The bigger lesson I had to learn the hard way was boundaries. Work cannot be the number one thing in your life, even when you own the business. I tried the 12 to 18 hour days, every day, and it is genuinely damaging. There has to be a healthy work-life balance. You have to make time for yourself and the things that refuel you.
You can’t give from an empty cup. In order to be of real help to the people who depend on you, you have to take care of yourself first. That’s not a luxury — it’s a requirement.
