Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Welker.
Erin, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
As a little girl I always loved taking my parents cameras and snapping pictures. And then when the film was developed I’d go through the photos over and over again because I loved having that tangible item in my hand.
When I was 13, I decided that I needed to take an elective that wasn’t the same as everyone else. That’s when I decided to take photography. I learned how to develop film, layout a newspaper and yearbook, plus learned how to interview people for the photo; ask the right questions, that sort of thing. I loved it a lot but band, at the time, was considered more important at the time. When photography was just a “hobby” and not something I could get a degree in.
At 18, everyone had left for college and I had stayed behind to attend community college. I took to photography again because I needed something to do to occupy my time when I wasn’t working or in class. My grandfather had just given me some cash for Christmas that year and with that I bought my first DSLR.
I had some point and shoots but nothing with a lens. From there I really got into photography and focused on the art behind it.
In 2010, I ended up in Austin and going to Austin Community College for their photographic technology program. Not only did I learn the foundations but I also learned how to run a business. And in January of 2011, Erin Frances Photography was born.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road at all. Haha! But it certainly has been worth it.
First there was imposture syndrome, being a broke college kid, to being a broke 20 something. Then there was the pandemic and other mental health struggles.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a wedding photographer that specializes in more elopement/intimate type weddings but also lifestyle portraits of couples and families!
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
First my fiancé – he’s been my biggest cheerleader, support, guide and sounding board through it all.
The Austin Community College photographic Technology professors during 2011-2014. They made a big dent in my camera/photography knowledge.
A big shout out to the ATX Wedding Photographer group on IG – we lift each other up, help one another with tough situations and referrals.
Nicole Hill from Horizon Found – in 2020 I got to back to basics with her and her education program. I needed a reminder that I could do this, that photography was still a part of me after years of battling mental health ups and downs. Her guidance and support make a big difference in not just my business but my life too.
McKenzie Bigliazzi – I owe her everything, especially when it comes to the gram. Her podcast, blog and IG posts are exactly her and she always shows up as herself, and she inspires me to do the same. While having her help with IG things, she also made a big difference in my every day, by remind me that I do not have to post daily or put all my attention on socials.
All of my repeating clients – they don’t realize how much it means to me that they constantly rebook me. It makes me feel so loved and valued!
