Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Doering.
Hi Matt, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up with a piano in my house and taking piano lessons on and off when I was young kid. I did middle school and high school band as well as playing drums in my church’s youth and Sunday morning bands. In the middle of all that, my brother bought me my first guitar and I started figuring out how to play. I continued playing music through out college, all the while truly believing it would only be a part of what I did, but not necessarily being THE thing I did. Then in 2015, I felt like I should try writing some original music; my own songs. I shared those with a few friends and they encouraged me to continue. Not 10+ years later, 4 EPs, and touring across the US, I have stepped into work as an indie folk rock artist.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t know if anyone in the music industry has a “smooth road”. Honestly, it seems like everyone is either working hard and then burns out and goes to find a more stable job, or they’re working hard and then it turns into something greater. For me it’s been just a long journey of the next small step. Writing the next song, finding the next collection of songs for the next record, finding new musical friends to work with, finding the next tour spot, and so on. None of it seems necessarily smooth, but it is slowly becoming an easier thing to do and to keep doing.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Like I said previously, I’m an indie folk rock songwriter. I like to call my musical genre Suburban Dad Folk Rock. It doesn’t mean that it’s ONLY for Suburban Dads, but rather that I am a suburban dad that makes folk rock that is about my life experiences of love and hope and the joy I have found in my faith in Jesus. Now I know a lot of folks here “Jesus” in connection with music, and may think that what I create is going to sound like one very specific style; however, I tend to lean harder into indie music and songwriters for inspiration. What sets my work apart from others is the desire to have music that is equal parts deep and relatable to any listener.
What’s next?
Currently my plans for the future include releasing a new EP in either late 2026, or early 2027 as well as working to produce for other musicians in the greater Central Texas region.
