Today we’d like to introduce you to Anu Kumar.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born in India, and raised in Chicago from the age of two. I went to the University of Illinois, and after I graduated, I moved to Texas.
I have been married, divorced, and remarried. I have two children.
I have been a personal trainer for 27 years and a Life Coach for 13 years. My journey began as a premed student where I received my strong science background while I also worked in the industry as an EMT. I decided to not go to medical school but still pursue my passion in the fitness and health industry. I have been self-employed as a trainer for 24 years. I take great pride in setting myself apart from many others through my passion in helping people make changes in their life! Whether it is from a fitness, diet or lifestyle standpoint, I love showing people how to attain their goals and aspirations.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely not been smooth! I shut down my business in Houston and moved to Austin with two young children. As I was juggling my training and coaching business in a new city, I soon found myself getting divorced. It was at this time that I briefly pursued a career in medical sales (shy of one year). This is pivotal as my medical sales journey ended with a traumatic brain injury. I was unconscious, air lifted to the hospital and on life-support. The doctors did not know if I would make it through the night. Fortunately, for me, I survived, and even more importantly, I recovered. It took every bit of one year to recover. I was well aware of physical rehab and recovery, but personally dealing with the mental/brain rehab was a whole new ball game. After my year of recovery, I decided to resume my career with training and coaching. It has shaped how I am even better able to help my clients!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As mentioned earlier, personal training and life coaching. I specialize in pre-and postnatal training, weight loss and rehab from injuries. I have a strong understanding of biomechanics and how to help people despite their limitations.
I am most proud of recovering from my brain injury and making my business thrive again!
I truly believe I am a people person and with my great intuition I am able to help others by tapping into what most do not see.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I would say I’ve been fortunate with reaching the right clientele in my training business and building strong relationships. However, I would say more bad luck in the area of coaching as I’ve been limited with my reach.
I’ve had many challenging times/periods in my life. Though these times were very difficult, my mindset allowed me to persevere and come out stronger! This has helped me greatly in my life and business.
