Today we’d like to introduce you to Cameron Shoppach.
Cameron, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
After almost a decade in the hospital, I just simply couldn’t work in human medicine anymore. With my wife’s support, I decided to pursue something. I’ve always been passionate about: shelter dogs. I got a job that flew me to a facility in Florida that specialized in only working behavior shelter dogs. After 6 months there I started a new job in Indianapolis doing just about everything on the dog side of the shelter. I somewhat jokingly started an Instagram page to get more eyes on harder to adopt dogs, but after getting 50,000 followers in one month, I realized it could be something bigger than just a silly page where I pick up dogs and cats. 2 years later we’ve raised tens of thousands of dollars, and had dogs adopted to every corner of the country because they saw my page.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There’s a saying in the Animal welfare world that the only thing that two dog trainers can agree on is the third dog trainer is wrong. Everyone has strong opinions In the training/ shelter world so there’s definitely been a few people that have tried to get me “cancelled” or fired for the way I work with dogs. Besides that, though, I love what I do and seeing the impact social media can have on these shelter dogs makes it pretty easy to ignore the critics
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I don’t have a ring light or a tripod. I don’t have other people film video or content of me doing things. I spend usually less than 2 minutes editing my videos. I work around 50 hours a week and none of that has anything to do with my social media, and I think the authenticity and the lack of the usual influencer antics draws folks in. As far as the normal social media Creator and the money making goals that they have, I’m just trying to get homeless pets into homes and fundraise for causes that help the dogs that I’m working with.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I have a bachelor’s in exercise sports science with an emphasis in health wellness promotion in clinical populations. I was an American College of Sports Medicine certified exercise physiologist and did cardiac rehabilitation for 8 years. I’m also really good at roller skating.
