Today we’d like to introduce you to Rakhi Mutreja.
Rakhi, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
The Spinning Wheel was created with the vision of building a warm, welcoming, and creative space where people of all ages could come together to explore art, learn new skills, and experience the joy of creating with their hands. What started as a passion for pottery and handmade art slowly grew into a vibrant community studio offering ceramics, pottery wheel throwing, mosaic, felting, painting, and mixed-media experiences for kids and adults alike. Founded by Rakhi. whose love for creativity, teaching, and mindful art experiences inspired the journey, The Spinning Wheel focuses not just on making art, but on building confidence, connection, and creative thinking. Rakhi believes that art has the power to bring people together, slow life down, and create meaningful memories, which is reflected in every workshop, camp, birthday celebration, and creative session hosted at the studio.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Opening The Spinning Wheel was a beautiful journey, but it also came with many struggles and challenges behind the scenes. One of the biggest challenges Rocky faced was rebuilding the business from scratch after moving from India to the United States during COVID, even though the studio had already established itself successfully back home. Starting over in a new country meant understanding a completely different system, building a new community, finding the right studio space, investing in equipment and kilns, and slowly earning the trust of families and customers again. As a small business owner, artist, mother, teacher, marketer, and manager all at once, often had to wear multiple hats every single day.
Another major challenge was creating a space that stayed true to the vision of conscious creativity and sustainability while also managing the realities of running a business — staffing, scheduling, operational costs, inventory, repairs, customer expectations, and maintaining quality experiences consistently. Building a community-centered art studio also required patience and persistence because the goal was never just to teach pottery or art, but to create a meaningful and welcoming environment where people could truly connect, slow down, and feel inspired. Despite the struggles, every challenge helped shape The Spinning Wheel into the warm, creative, and community-driven space it is today.
