Rising Stars: Meet Dennis Welch

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dennis Welch.

Hi Dennis, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I have always loved books and started reading well before starting elementary school. In fact, I have written two books myself.

When I started elementary school, I was blessed to have a forward-thinking principal who came to my class on day one during our reading circle. She walked me down to the library (I had never been in one to that point) and when we walked in she said, “Now, Dennis, when your reading circle gathers each day, politely excuse yourself and come down to the library. You can read ANY book you want.”

That decision by Ms. McRee was life-changing. It caused me to fall in love with books and words.

Doing publicity for authors and their books is a perfect role for me. I love what I do every day. It’s a privilege.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I have learned that nothing is wasted in this life if you take the time to learn from it.

In my early days, I was a songwriter and recording artist. I was on the cusp of a major record deal when I realized that I couldn’t do the travel anymore. That felt like failure at the time, but it wasn’t really failure at all. It was the catalyst for me going to work for The Gallup Organization and meeting the book publicist who broke all of their big books in the media.

After 13 years, I left Gallup and went to work with that publicist and learned the business from one of the best ever.

In January of 2012, I launched Articulate PR and Communications and it has grown ever since.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I believe that every good thing happens in a dialogue. I also believe that most of us are not in enough dialogues.

My job every day is not to tell the entire story but just enough to intrigue people in the media and cause them to reach out to start a dialogue. When that happens, the chances of something great go up exponentially.

I mostly work with first-time authors, many of whom are self-published or are published by small houses. We have gotten them in Forbes, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Mornings with Maria and many other high-profile media outlets. All because we were able to start an intriguing conversation.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
According to Gallup, only one person in five answers “yes” to the question ‘At work, I get to do what I do best every day’. Just twenty percent!

I am grateful every day to be in that twenty percent.
