Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Guzmán.
Hi Jay, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have always loved art and have been a part of it for as long as I can remember. Some of my first gifts I remember getting as a child were art supplies and I’m very thankful that my family and friends have always been supportive and encouraging me to keep pursuing art. About 14 years ago, I got my start actually selling my art.
I would walk around downtown Austin every weekend from 10pm till the bars were closing. Selling hand-printed T-shirts and hand-made canvases. I did that for about 3-4 years while homeless. Due to some circumstances at the time, I ended up going to jail for a year and learned a bit about tattooing while in there. I continued to tattoo once I got out and ended up with a formal apprenticeship at a local shop. Fast forward a few years and a lot of hard work. I now own my own shop Meticulous Tattoo located on the east side of Austin.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There have been a lot of struggles and bumps along the way, but it has strengthened me for the road ahead. It has also shown me a lot about myself in the process. I think without the struggles and the hardships, I wouldn’t be able to fully appreciate how good life really is. I think the same could be said for anyone. The dark times, pains and frustrations allow us to experience and really enjoy the little things and how far we’ve come. I also have always had an affinity for the road less traveled and taking the long way around. Not having it easy has made me hungrier and want to achieve my goals that much more!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
First and foremost, I’m an artist. I draw paint, screenprint, paint logos, signs, and murals. Some graphic design as well. If it has something to do with art or being creative in some way, I probably have my hands in it. Hahaha, I’d say my best medium and what I’m most known for would be tattooing. I most do large-scale realistic pieces in black and grey that tell a story and flow well with the body. Creating one of a kind piece that reads well, has a cohesive theme and is unique to the individual. I’d say something that sets me apart from the crowd is my passion, drive, and work ethic. I am always looking to learn more and improve each and every day both in my personal and professional life.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
It’s hard to choose just one. I’d have to say spending time with friends and family without as many worries. As cliche as it sounds, most of my favorite memories involve a lot of laughter and love with those closest to me.
